Contrary to my thoughts, my bro' in law was told this by his Vauxhall Mastershit centre - they said that under braking and lifting off when the rears go light you need all the grip you can get to stop the rear snapping out. If the front's lose grip whilst cornering on a FWD it's not the end of the world but if the rear lets go......muffindell wrote:It's actually more important to put the best gripping tyres on the back

Tell that to the bloke coming the other way that you just understeered into head onWelton wrote:If the front's lose grip whilst cornering on a FWD it's not the end of the world but if the rear lets go......

Nah seriously though, understeer is inherantly safer than oversteer.
I have to say it, I have NCT5s and I'm quite happy with them, then again I liked the Pirellis (P6000s and then P7s) that were on there before.

I've got Falken 512 Ziex's all round on my V6 and I have a spirited drive to work every day. Can't fault them....the grip in the dry and wet is rally good and so far they look to be hard wearing. Cost about £220 for the set fitted.

Re: Oh noes - a tyre choice thread!
Hi, always run my hdi on pirelli p6000's and always found them excellent. Welly put these on the rear. I never even thought about suggesting getting different tyres. As cheap tyres tend to be just that. Dont get me wrong i dont drive like a 17 yr old with a death wish but its nice to know when you feel like having a bit of fun those rubber things that are keeping you on the road brake and grip well in the wet and the dry. And as for road noise these i have found to be very quite.

Always put new tyres on the rear of the car; when the fronts are past it, rotate the rear to front, put the new on the rear. It's not only safer but if you just keep changing the front set, the rears perish within a few years.

To be honest, I have used most premium and some budget brands over the years, firstly you get what you pay for. I have never got on with Goodyear tyres of any description, they often break away just when you're least expecting it, some tread patterns fill with air and 'lift' the car at speed giving the sensation of light steering, while the NCT's that I used several years ago only started to grip reasonably well after they were half worn. Pirelli QC is doubtful in some areas, although the P7's are excellent in all areas, other than wear. Michelin, excellent in all areas, although not wonderful in the wet.
