Head Gasket or not??

Post by biglamb »

hi, all.
ive not been on for a while, as mu pug has been fine and dandy after the water prob from a few months ago. But now i think my head hasket has gone.
This is wrong...
cooling system pressurising (very fast)
oil in the header tank (not much but definatly there)
smoke/ steam from the oil filler and dipstick port (most obvious just after opening)

Not too bad...
no sign of water in the oil

Good bits...
my air con has started working again

So, does this sound like the head gasket?? Do you think K-seal will fix it? (i dont)

If this is the head gasket, i will be doing it myself, as an amature diy mechanic. So, all you real mechanics out there. what do i need to look out for? and how much should i expect to pay for a kit? and do i need new stretch bolts on these? for all who dont know it is a 2lt hdi engine in my 2001 406 executive estate.

Thanks in advance chaps.

Sounds like it to me.

Haynes 4 spanner - (read this!)

New head bolts are recommended.
Remember - it only takes a few inches of water to drown a 406 don't make the same mistake I made! The V6 Exec is no more.

Jameslxtd did a nice thread when he replaced his HG (exactly the same symptoms) it wasn't exactly a step by step but there were pics of the destruction (sorry dismanting) and some good info. TBH it looked a bloody nightmare to do on your drive but if you have the skill, tools etc then fine.

Here it is.......viewtopic.php?f=1&t=3814&hilit=tripped+and+threw

Strange search text but it was somthing I remember
