D9 Clutch replacement cost

Post by Nicodemus »

Just been quoted £460 inc vat from two of the more reliable independants in the area for a clutch on my D9 (Hdi 90), thrust bearing making that lovely tinkling tappety noise. Works out to about 8 hours labour plus clutch kit - and I know it's a bugger of a job so figured it best to get the whole caboodle done.

Anyone found anywhere decent cheaper?

Well, see, there is some sense in the higher quotes and indeed my mechanic quoted the same 8 hrs to me when I enquired.

To do the 406 clutch "properly" requires the removal and disconnection of *loads* of stuff to afford sufficient access to the clutch job. However there is another way of doing it cheaper and faster but you run the risk of spending the next few days untrapping cables and reconnecting stuff, finding broken brackets, missing bolts etc. etc. where the job was rushed.

Another thing highly recommended is to change the main crank seal whilst they're at it.

I personally would not be comfortable seeing my car at a "Mr Crutch" type place with an 18 year old smaking the hell out of something trying to liberate the bell housing or whatever :|

Normally best done if you have flywheel off. Had mine done, it then started to leak oil for the next 6 months, until the stripped the entire thing down to change it again!

As Welly said, to do the job properly means dropping the whole transmission down off the engine with all that entails. Since my old girl must be on the road making money for as much time and as reliably as possible; going for the cheap shortcut job I judge to be a higher risk option.

It's a major pain that maintainability in this area of the car is so poor but that's balanced by the relatively high reliability of the 406 diesels in general. I average 900 miles a week, it's got to keep going.

Popular for taxiing here in east midfordshire are all diesels - 406's, 307sw, Octavias and Superbs and my own fave from a driver comfort point of view Rover75's with the beemer 2 litre diesel motor. Quite a few Toyota Avensis appearing lately. A number of 407's appeared and disappeared over the course of about 8 weeks this spring - have gained themselves a poor reputation for reliability mainly electrical probs and hearsay probs with camshafts, can't confirm the latter.

Some time ago i asked for a quote off my local main stealer for
a clutch replacement in my 406 (thought it was slipping ) am quite
sure they said £419 so £460 at a non main dealer seems excessive

Good thing you said that Puggy - Didn't get a price from stealer, just assumed they'd be spensive - they've just quoted 399.91 all in..

I paid £400 for the complete clutch and a lower engine mount from my local garage

It was well worth the money.

Booked old girl in with local stealer for Mon and Tues.

Then, about 3am this morn (saturday) after a stunningly kak night since 1700 friday, clutch packed up completely. Had two youngish lunnen yobs in car, major grief.. They'd got dead stroppy when me and two of my oppos parked up in town waiting for shouts (jobs - shouts equals call on radio hopefully with job) had refused to take them straight off the street (we're private hire only and the feds is tightening up big time) without prior booking. So they phoned number off our mags (mags = magnetic signs on front doors) on side of car and, voila, I got the shouty arrogant knob fondling, drunken shitty genetic throwbacks. Evil young bastards. Scrotes who should have been drowned at birth. I've met so many punchy tossers like this over the years I must qualify for a cdm and scar :cheesy: . Prats.

Dropped tham off with extreme prejudice (i.e. warned control not to accept any bookings from that area 'cause severe risk to driver - also phoned mates on other firms to pass on no no - last seen by driver for other firm walking 4 miles back towards hotel in high dudgeon. Good. Personally I'd have slotted em, but in this enlightened day and age even unethical, moralless, vicious, selfish scum like that get a break) would have preferred to not stop whilst dropping off but needed to extract cash from them sadly. Tosspots.

So our boss, who is bleeding good bloke yah knows, gets me towed back to yard and lends me his chrysler grand voyager to use until my old girl is fixed - mwahahahaha. Oh! Hang on. Clutch is a bit naff on that too... Oh bugger! I'm doomed, doomed I tell ye... :(

Mind you the leather seats, dvd player and whatnot make up for it. Shame the air con is knacked, it rattles at the front and the clutch is buggered and it's not got a vhf two way at the moment. Still it has done well over 200,000 miles so I prolly shouldn't be ungratefull.

Top man our taxi boss, really, I knew there was a reason I've stuck it out with them through thick and thick.

To bed now at 0519, knowing bloody well I won't kip.

Grrrrrr...

HI,

I know only too well about the 'lack of kip' when wound.
I usually get it with the last job after a pleasant evening.

Just to close the saga :) After clutch replacement (also had them do front n/s anti-rollbar link arm and engine temp sensor while they had her in bits at the front) old girl drives like a dream, an absolute pleasure. 8)
