fan belt

Post by fritters »

i have a 1999 pug hdi diesel 406 which i put through an m.o.t recently ( a very expensive business, cost me £300) but the mechanic advised me i needed a new fan belt plus a new tensioner pulley which i bought and fitted myself quite easily considering i am a daft lorry driver with no mechanical experience, so i was quite pleased with myself until i started it up and there was a smell of burning ,either put the fan belt on too tightly or put it on the wrong way i tried the haynes manual but they seem to have photos of everything except the thing you want. does anyone have a photo or a diagram to show how it should be fitted, also i read quite often on the forum about guys complaining about Peugeot parts prices being a bit expensive, the pug dealer in glasgow quoted me £52.00 for a pulley tensioner i got the same part for £ 18.00 from my local supplier, some difference

Hi there. Umm, there's two pictures in Haynes (15.8 & 15.17) but these show a car with air con, is that the problem? I have a feeling it can only go one way but if you think it's too tight it's best not to run it, it'll kill the alternator bearings.

Peugeot parts are indeed stupidly expensive, rather than just providing a source for maintaining cars that they already sold, they seem to see them as another source of income or maybe they're making sure they kill them off early so people have to buy new ones  . It's best to avoid paying them if possible, by either using your supplier or there are some on the 'net like http://www.gsfcarparts.com/, http://www.eurocarparts.com/, http://www.thepeugeotshop.co.uk/ or www.pugspares.co.uk/. You'll often get the genuine part but at a fraction of the cost.
