Forgot to mention, the only other thing that changed was a new battery fitted, all electrics working fine no errors.

Folks,

Just though i'll update everyone, the high consumption problem seems to be solved. Th eonly issue i think was that a new battery was put in. This means the ecu must have been reset when the old battery was pulled and the new one put in as now i have done nearly 360 miles with £55 worth of diesal which is about right (local London driving only).

Blimey... so were you working all this just off the gauge?

Being old skool I don't trust anything electronic that much. The float swings through an arc so it will always go faster one half than the other. Top and bottom are usually the only measures you can trust. Every car I have had I fill right up to the top (method as described by mjb) run it down till its near empty then refill again. I usually fill just before the warning light comes on, or very soon after.

When I refill I reset the trip counter. If there is anything going wrong it will start to show up in fuel consumption. If you use the right technique (after first click, reduce the fill rate and draw nozzle partly out of filler till it is properly full). I usually fill it with about 70 litres, which means typically I leave 5 in the tank.

My HDi 110 gets up to about 740-750 miles to a tank if I do long trips. Would probably get more if my right foot wasn't so heavy

Round London (we commute to work by car most days now, rugrat in nursery at work) we get more like 600-650 miles to a tank, I suppose each day we do about 20 miles and its nearly all slow stuff, probably averaging 20mph. Just worked that out and it's about 39-42 mpg in the city and 48 on the motorway. I guess if I could stay below 95 on the motorway more often I might even get over 50 mpg 8) - what amazes me is that fuel consumption around town is so good with the HDi, not dropping significantly below the motorway miles.

We only fill up about once a month which in my book is brilliant. My last car was a gorgeous older E class Merc with 220 BHP of 24 valve straight-six teutonic fun, but she really drank the petrol (so don't call the 406 a "big" car, it isn't). I have been pleasantly surprised by the sprightliness of the 406 and its a real pleasure to drive, not something I thought I'd say after sorrowfully parting with the Merc...
