fixing auto gearbox

Post by jibz »

Hi all, I have a 406 executive 96 model, and was thinking fixing an auto gearbox instead to replace the manual, Has anyone done this? can it be done ? if yes what would be needed? Thanks

Wow!

I think buying another (auto) car would be best and to be honest the Peugeot slushmatic box isn't the greatest by all accounts :|

Also something's telling me that the ECU for the fueling etc is different on auto's.

Assuming you have a 1996 2.0 turbo then a V6 auto (if you must) will return about the same mpg.

I have a feeling that it'd be a lot more complicated than you think, different engine ecu, etc. etc. Someone came up a while back who wanted to put a manual box in a V6 but our late lamented resident mechanical genius said even the engine was different

Oh yeah, I remember that.

Thinking about it Auto's have different crankshaft output doodad's than manuals and would probably effect the bell housing so you may need a salvage auto 'engine' just to convert the last few mechanicals to the slush box.

Of course, I could be talking bollax

well, i have pages to write on this but I will squeeze it in. Here in SL we do otherwise, converting Autos into Manual, simply because the auto boxes have failed in big time here in Sri Lanka and the local agents does not have a work bench to repair auto boxes. Brand new auto tranny costs 900,000 in rupees [£5 210.64] Therefore people tend to convert from Auto to manual. However the conversion is not easy, Tranny, gear changing levers, axels and shafts has to be changed. The most complicated part is the ECU and electrics. There are two ECU's in Automatics, one for the Engine and the other for the tranny box. In all of these converted cars there's a manual switch to by pass the tranny ECU but at the starting it has be switched on. After the start switch has to be off in order to by pass the tranny box, pretty hectic that is.

So you have to start the engine, then turn off the slush box ecu

I bet the engine has the shock of it's life when it's first hooked up to the manual box  Arrrrrrrggggghhhhh REVS!! what's all this
