Pugless & time to leave the club?

Post by fwubble »

Hi guys,

Okay, before anyone else gets the dig in, no I have not been a regular on here, in fact the few times I have posted were asking for help with my aerial stalk.

Now we can get down to the nitty gritty;

Had a bump - or rather was bumped into - in the Pug - a 406HDi Rapier estate 90, on a 51 plate, with a new clutch kit & flywheel, everything else has run sound as since we got it 4 years ago. T'insurance bod has been in touch to say it is a write off (front end, passenger wing, suspension, lights, bonnet etc + car will have to go on a jig before any other work).

Apart from the damage caused in the accident, there was a dent in the drivers side wing from some muppet at Morrisons the week before  and there were a couple of scratches on the passenger side doors.

My question is, what sort of price should I expect to get for it? I have had a price of them, which I don't think is too bad, the problem is, I don't trust insurance valuers, especially when the credit crunch is on, I think they may be holding back. Parker's is a bit too vague due to the age of the motor, AutoTrader has very few Pug's in, I can't even find a similar spec car on the web. :?

T'insurance bloke is from our insurers (LLoyds TSB), The fella who killed my motor has claimed full liability etc. :)

Your thoughts would be appreciated. :?: :?:

Cheers

Col

P.S. I haven't said a price on purpose, I was hoping to see what other peeps thought before I posted it. Also, if we can get a decent Pug, I won't need to hand my badge in. :cheesy:

Oh bugger, sorry to hear that :( At least there's no arguments.

You haven't said the year or how many miles it's done either :P

I've no idea, it'd be worth about 8,000€ here. I tried E&M, looks like anything between 2 and 3 grand (and some really stupid prices). Guessing 2001 and average mileage Parker's says £2,375 for a franchised dealer (What (we love Fords and VWs) Car? says something like 1,750), did I do something wrong? I did manage to argue this one once, it was many years back though and I can't remember how I did it but it did involve an independent valuer.

I'm afraid stuff like new clutches go with things like brakes and tyres - normal wear and tear, it's just tough luck you've not long had them done. :(

Cheers for the response Steve, You guessed correctly with 2001, presumed anyone replying would be from the UK, and spot the 51 plate bit (sorry, forgot Pugs are sold outside of the UK, being a French motor & all :) & Pug owners will be spread far & wide )

Mileage is a tad high at 120k, the insurance fella said it was extremely high for a seven year old motor, it was likely the engine would need replacing in the not too distant future - I did query this one, as far as I knew, the 2.0HDi lumps were good for double the distance ours has done, the first 75k were motorway miles with a rep & the garage said the car was immaculate when they got it & needed very little doing when they got it (although they all say that I'm sure).

Chuffed with the other bloke, he admitted liability at the time of the bump & 10 minutes after we went to our insurers they rang back to confirm he admitted liability with his own insurers - almost sent him a Christmas card for that!

I come from GB, I'm just a bit out of touch. When I looked on Parker's it seemed to say 51 plates bleed over into early 2002, which will make some difference in a psychological, illogical, it's the same bleedin' car innit, way. Shame about the mileage, people still think in terms of Fords dropping to bits at 100,001 miles...

I'd just like to say that's crap :) 406s very rarely die due to the engine - most will happily do well over 200k withoout batting an eyelid. It's just the stuff around it which gets affected by age and makes replacing the car the more economically savvy option.

As for the price of the car, I'd speak to a few garages and see if they can give you a rough idea based off a vague description.

Cheers MJB

I didn't think the diesel engines were that shabby.

I will be poping round a few garages tomorrow to find a rough price, we have to have a drive to the repair centre to pick up our belongings & tax disk anyway.

I couldn't advise you on a value, but I'm convinced the insurance companies offer is just that, an offer and open to negotiation. In the few cases I do know about, all but one has received a second and improved offer on rejecting the first.
Guess who the moron who accepted the first offer was
2002 HDi 2.2 Exec Estate, (2008-12) (wonderful)
2003 HDi 2.2 6-speed Exec Estate (2012-19) (also a gem)
2009 Citroen C5 2.0 HDi VTR+ Estate (godawful heap)
2008 BMW E91 330i touring (great fun - murdered by a reversing SUV)
2007 BMW E91 325i touring (slower smoother quieter)

A few years back I got wiped off my motorbike by some bint in a 4x4 who was so short she was actually looking through the wheel at the road ahead. Safe...NOT!

Anyhoo, the insurers first offr was £400 more than I'd paid for the bike, so I broked the golden rule and accepted the first offer before they changed their minds!

The bike was written off and I got £1100 for it, bought it back for £400 and fixed it for £70! R-reg CB500 with at the time 58,000 on it.
The only damage was the generator cover (& new gasket & oil obviously), lh barend & weight, & mirror! Total madness.

Cheers all for your responses, insurance fella offered £1800, which he has raised to £1900 - will have a think whether that is fair or not

£1,900.00 is excellent IMO.

I'd have said £1,400.00 at most these days :|
