Ticking

Post by 406Iain »

Hi all,I have a quick question.
I noticed yesterday morning after work my 51 plate 1.8 406 was making a random ticking or clicking noise from under or around the ECU.I put it down to the sub zero temperature and went off to bed.Ive just got home from work this morning and its doing it again.
Can anyone shed any light as to what it could be?
Ive had a quick look as best I can without it being on ramps to look underneath and cant see anything or precisely pinpoint where the noise is coming from.
TIA,Iain.

Hi,

Do you mean an electrical ticking? or when the engine's running?

This will sound bizare but came up on here ages ago (thanks to supafrisk) and it seems some ecu's tick/click and it can be solved by stopping, remove key, turn key through 180degs and put back in! bizare? yes - but she and her mechanic swore to it.

Daft question, but are you sure it's not one of your injectors?

Good point m, could be the injector pulse width due to the cold weather.

He could try the James FAQ thing of disconnecting the Lambda for a bit to see if the noise changes?

Mine does it sometimes. It sounds like the solenoid in the idle air valve going ape; I'll have to unplug it the next time it happens to check.
It's working fine so I'm not that bothered.

To be honest as much as I like the car (had it 2 years so it must be ok) I wouldnt be surprised if its something expensive.
Its just another thing to go on the list along with a random rattle 3 mechanics cant find on the engine,a loud clonk when you start it or change down to second and just a general feeling of tiredness and fragility. Its a 51 with only 69k on it but it just feels worn out.Its absolutly babied, services every 7/8k,just had the cambelt done, gets washed atleast once a week and detailed once a month.Im just tired of the constant clonks and clicks making me think whats going to go wrong next!

WOW! er, good luck with them then

My car seems to make a "new" interior rattle or squeek every other day! since having the engine mount done I've got a new rattle behind the binnacle which rattles in time to certain engine revs...nice

I had a rattle coming from the overhead console, all I had to do was touch it with a finger and it went but you can't exactly drive it like that. I tried packing it out with packing foam to no avail so eventually I took it to pieces, tightened up the switches, tightened up the screws holding the circuit board in, hot glue gunned the sunroof switch and put dabs on the corners of the clear plastic. When I put it back it was exactly the same :x
