Injectors

Post by swiss »

So, um... would I be getting in over my head to pull the injectors and reset the tappets? Maybe renew the valves?

The last set of 'jectors I pulled were, well, two feet long. While a diesel's a diesel where ever you go, I realise an engine bay is a bit more cramped than an engine room and I'm wondering how much hassle I'd be letting myself in for and whether or not it's worth it :)

I've not done this myself (lazy bugger that I am) but you may need a special socket if one of the injectors has a wire on it. It's probably worth it if they're ancient and your car's not running right, other than that if it aint broke...

HDi or TD?

HDI will require removal of high pressure rail and stuff lots of new seals..... and if you get any dirt in there is will not be good! Basically I'd only be trusting to a diesel specialist or very good garage to go near the HDi full system.

The TD ones should be same as any old diesel and I'd consider swapinging them myself.

There again if it ain't broke (pass emission test etc) then don't fix it.

Well, indeed, it ain't broke... the idea was sparked by the MOT tech mentioning dripping injectors causing a car to fail on emissions... that and I like tinkering. I'm a serial tinkerer.

Think perhaps I'll leave this one to the experts :)

You would get good results fitting injection cleaner in the fuel filter housing, along with a new filter.

You can't do anything with the injectors, except replace them....they cost a lot of money.

You can't set the tappets.

Tappets are bucket & shim (which are always bastards to get right) and the injectors on those can be cleaned/reconned quite cheaply. Unlike the Hdi's :(

Swiss: me too, ever since I was a kid I've loved taking things to bits to see how they work. Now I'm older I can also put them back together again too... :D

Ok, I'll rephrase....you can't EASILY set the tappets, it's a major job, not like adjusting tappets in the conventional way with a nut, a screw, and a feeler blade.

You can't recon injectors yourself, you need specialist equipment, therefore, the best thing to do is to replace them with an exchange set.You can only clean the end of the injector nozzle....hardly worth taking them out for, injection cleaner would clean them, inside and out.

I've only done bucket & shim tappets once (on a Scirocco, strangely enough) and that was enough. Anyway, the guy is an engineer...

Here reconning injectors rather involves whipping yours out and taking them along to be done, I've been here a long time so I forget about luxuries like shops actually holding something in the way of stock :(

It's like, I wanna keep the car as a project once I qualify in the summer and buy a newer one. On the other hand, I could certainly use the money from selling this one and, probably more importantly, the wife won't let me...

It's funny how women just don't understand the need for a car in various stages of disrepair hanging around the garden (get rid of it, have you never seen Keeping Up Appearances? You could always find something more interesting to fiddle with later)
