K&N Air Filters
Has anybody ever invested in a K&N Air filter and applied it to a Turbo Diesel, and have you noticed any difference in the car noise and performance?

If you're thinking it might change the sound from a tractor to a formula one car, you're a bit mistaken. The best(?) you could hope for is a louder tractor...

No certainly not, its simply my first car, and i read packaging and they all claim miracles, just dont know how true this marketing hype is. I simply want people opinions. I dont want to modify it because i know that due to the age its not worth it, im purely interested in things on the market. To be honest the motor is great and runs better than newer cars in its range, its been well looked after i am simply getting interested in the products and accessories around.

Had one in my HDi, made it slightly smoother, maybe little more go lower the rev. However when I had to have the head rebuilt (fan belt failure -> slipped cambelt) the garage commented on how badly pitted the valves where, it did have over 160k on it but i think the K&N filter (probably 25 to 30k) had a lot to do with it.

Would the pitting be caused by the extra air thats forced in, did you have to adjust fuel to balance the extra air?

Filters don't force air in, that's the job of a turbo/supercharger. Filters actually reduce the airflow because they've got to filter out all the crap in it. "Performance" filters however slightly improve performance by letting a bit more air through because they don't filter it as well, so more crap's hitting your turbo and engine

Keep it standard. So called performance exhausts and filters can actually reduce power. Use more fuel and effect the way the car starts. My hdi is superchipped would not mess around filters or exhausts to be honest. More performance does have its issues new clutch and flywheel. Also extra wear to the turbo. Due to being chipped.

A couple of old members on here (gone now) fitted induction kits to there HDi's and reported a massive induction "woosh" from the turbo inlet
Performance wise - not much in it and you'd have to keep cleaning/oiling the thing to be sure. In fact many over-oil the foam type filters which then cakes up the MAF sensor

The pitting would be caused by the dirt that wasn't getting filtered out..... The computer (ecu) automatically adjusts fuel/air ratio so all you have to do is fit the panel.S129 wrote:Would the pitting be caused by the extra air thats forced in, did you have to adjust fuel to balance the extra air?
