Re: How many 406's have you had?
I had a 1998 2.1TD saloon for 4 years before upgrading to the coupe.
And did have its predecessor years ago, a 405.

Re: How many 406's have you had?
I briefly inherited a 2.0 GLX (I think) S reg D8 as a company car as I was waiting for my Audi. My mind was on this fancy German motor I was going to get, so I didn't really pay much attention. It would have been waiting to go back to the lease guys, so it would have been 3 years old already. I can remember feeling quite impressed with it, until white van man took me out in it, and my Audi arrived before it was fixed so I never saw it again.
A few years later I drove one of my colleagues D9 HD (something, I was convinced it was a HDI, but it was deffo a petrol, so what was it?) sometimes when my second Audi was in for repair (which was all the freaking time ~ I swear I will never, ever buy a VAG motor again. Ever. They treat you like sh**, even when their very expensive motor is breaking down every 3 seconds). Then I decided to plunge myself into poverty by trying to go it alone work wise.
Suddenly, as I was paying, I lost all of my car snobbery. I didn't want to pay more than £1500 for a car, and found a D8 1.8LX with just over 100k on the clock for £1400 three years a go. It's been really impressive ~ comfortable to drive, not to bad on fuel, really reliable despite a less than ideal maintenance schedule. I'm hoping to start taking care of it and get it to last a year or so longer. If it doesn't, and to be honest it doesn't owe me anything, I'll replace it with another.

<steve_earwig> I think this forum is more about keeping our cars going with minimal outlay than giving our cars more reason to go bang

What was wrong with the xsaraI'm on my first - thought about it last time, decided 406 too big, bought Xsara HDi estate
I have now seen the error of ways and joined the path of righteousness

On the whole very pleased with all of them & outside the usual servicing tyres etc. the only problems seem to be Crankshaft Pulleys & the electrical "Gremlins"that ALL post millenium cars suffer. I know people with much newer & "Better" cars with worse problems & that's why they change them every couple of years when the warranty's up. One guy's got an 18 month old beemer, must be on some kind of "car share" thing with the dealer 'cos they seem to have it as much as he has

406 HDI Exec Estate (2 off) & 307CC HDI Cabriolet
Re: How many 406's have you had?
I'm on my third, had a 405 too so I must have a bad addiction
I think the 406 addiction stems from my first, an 01/X HDi Rapier. Had an opposing headlight to headlight "head-on" with a beered up driver one Xmas day. Despite the vast damage to the car, my family all walked away without a scratch. I think sub-conciously that has stayed in my mind.

Re: How many 406's have you had?
The Xsara was absolutley brilliant, the most reliable car I've owned out of a total of about 30. It's only real failing was being a small car & hence much noisier & less comfy than the 406. I've still got the Xsara & drive it occasionally, it starts instantly, pulls like a train and compared to the Pug, feels like a go-cart, but it was never in the same league for a long journey. (But it's been to Scotland, France, Belguim, Luxembourg, Germany, Spain, Andora, Channel Islands)!djp30djp wrote:What was wrong with the xsaraI'm on my first - thought about it last time, decided 406 too big, bought Xsara HDi estate

2002 HDi 2.2 Exec Estate, (2008-12) (wonderful)
2003 HDi 2.2 6-speed Exec Estate (2012-19) (also a gem)

406 2.2 HDi SE
. I've had two 405's in the past though so there is a pattern forming.

Really like the look of the SE too - I think the interior's much more up to date, but when I got mine last year an SE would have been £1.5 - £2k more and gauranteed to depreciate at record speed, (mine's bad enough)HDiAndy wrote:only the one i've got. come the time to change i'll probably have a 407 or a very late406 2.2 HDi SE

Give it 6 months & I reckon you'll get a decent one for under £2k, less for a saloon....

Re: How many 406's have you had?
Hi all!!
I've had 5 pugs in total: -
2 306 1.9 tds
2 406 2.0 hdis (still have one)
and a 407 2.0 hdi.
Not bad cars - pity about the trade in value of the 407 at the moment
Can anyone guess what i was offered for a 2006 407 2.0 HDi 136 - X-Line with 32000 miles on the clock...
