406 hdi non starter .. pls help!!

Post by wasp »

Hi Peeps
I have just bought another 406 hdi- which is a non runner.its a 2001/51 multiplexed hdi (90)
The car was running perfect until the previous owner went away for two months and when he tried to unlock the car on his return with blipper it wouldnt open.He opened it with the key and tried to start it, but no dash lights at all infact no electric supply at all. so he bought a new battery, and it still refused to start.he then bought a new car and left it stood on his drive for a year.
When i got it back i charged the battery up a bit and tried to start.heres what i get:
engine cranks but wont fire.
when ignition turned on after about 5 seconds the headlights light up even tho the light switch is off.(no back lights)
no dash lights at all
no central locking
no electric windows
no interior lights
no dash display (date temp etc)
but the electric door mirrors work as does the ciggy lighter.
All fuses checked ok
blippers dont work
Any ideas??? ill go and start digging the green algae off the roof in the meantime :)
thanks loads
Dave.

Sounds very much like the BSI's shot. Not a cheap repair I'm afraid, it's dealer-only.

The mirrors and cigarette lighter socket don't go through the BSI. I think everything else does

I'd try to solicit a few more opinions from here first - a new BSI is not cheap and my confidence blaming the BSI is high but not 100%

This site has been passed onto me by my son-in-law, he used to do gas conversions.

He reckons they will talk to you on the phone about possible ECU problems.

problem solved, i had it tested at dealers , i said it had a suspect bsi fault... they spent an hour on it (ouch) and presented me with a report ............: "we think it might have a bsi fault":)
so estimate to check cars wiring, replace bsi , sync bsi/ecu, download software , recalbrate keys 500+
i then borrowed an ecu/bsi,key (used) and all worked ok except rad fans on when ignition on ? engine cold? see my newest post:(
So i bought a bsi ,ecu+key from fleabay (all same part nos/types/model year etc-got lucky here for 100 quid) and all is well, running fine. except fans still on rad when ign is on.
im guessing (hoping) that as its had the same fault with 2 ecus, bsi, keys that the fix maybe cheaper ie notecu/bsi related... lol
thx again
Dave

Wow, I didn't know you just replace a BSI unit with ECU and key with no further reprogramming. Thought the HP fuel pump needed programming as well?

WIN! I never thought about replacing all that stuff (presumably you've transplanted the transponder from the new key into your old so you can start the car without the immobiliser complaining?)

Definitely a cheaper option for BSI failures though, nice one! I presume you bought the parts from the same guy? I sincerely doubt anything would talk if they were from different cars :)

Yes all from same car had to transfer chip thing from key, only drawback is the mileage was 127k, now its added the mileage from the donor car (WHICH MUST HAVE BEEN A TAXI OR A SPACESHIP) WHICH NOW READ 312,000 EEK! BUT i only paid 100 quid for the car (which is in really nice condition) and have old mots , service history etc.
I did email alot of sellers before finding the correct part no's-pug must have a big box of ecu's (bosch, siemens, valeo) and bsi's (bosch, siemens, valeo) with loads of different part nos on each and randomly chuck them in when building em!
Easy fit..open box, change key chip, plug in ecu, plug in bsi, shut car doors (back window open), connect battery.WAIT 20 secs then lean in and turn side lights on to wake bsi THEN PRAY :)
.done!
Just the annoying fan fault now
Dave.

hi alladinn
The bsi (black box of tricks) is located directly behind the fuse board (next to the drivers knee) just pulls out from underneath.
you need:
bsi
engine ecu (located next to the cambelt cover in a plastic box)
key or keys
all the above must come frm the same donnor car and all part no's must be the same as your car's
i started looking on ebay for same model/year breaking...
another point, make sure its from an estate if you have an estate, otherwise the rear wash/wipe doesnt work.
hope this helps
Dave.
