Help ! brakes fail intermittently judder felt

Post by tomcourtney »

Just passed an MOT, brakes fine but occasionally the brakes fail and a strong irregular thumping / clunking can be felt through the brake pedal and I have to take my foot off and re-apply then they work. Had the pads and discs checked and front replaced a couple of thousand miles ago.
Going out now to take the wheels off and try to recognise the abs sensors & clean.
Any suggestions appreciated

Check the toothed ABS cog which is apparently behind the wheel hub
<steve_earwig> I think this forum is more about keeping our cars going with minimal outlay than giving our cars more reason to go bang

Both toothed cogs are loose, are they supposed to be complete as I can seperate them ie. they are not complete rings if you know what I mean?

Both front abs toothed cogs are broken, I'm told you can't just replace these , you need to replace the drive shaft. Is this correct?

Mine had a driveshaft replaced by the stealer before I got it for this reason, but if you look at this post, it looks like people have had some success 'patching then up'
2002 HDi 2.2 Exec Estate, (2008-12) (wonderful)
2003 HDi 2.2 6-speed Exec Estate (2012-19) (also a gem)

2008 BMW E91 330i touring (great fun - murdered by a reversing SUV)

Driveshafts must be replaced as cog not available as a seperate part,

Thanks doglife, like the option of repair in the other thread, worth a couple of hours with a wire brush and strong glue. Will have to investigate best glue.

Dealer £290 each plus fitting..
Parts place £154 each plus fitting
Scrap yard £35 each delivered next day (6 Mths guarantee) plus fitting
Local one man garage estimated £120 to fit.

Are the ABS rings not fitted to the CV joints?

CV joints are a lot cheaper than a full driveshaft.
