One tip, if yours has springs holding down the shoes with a hook on the end that hooks into a slot in the backplate, make yourself a tool for pushing the springs in and unhooking them.
Get a broken or old screwdriver and grind a slot in the end to fit the hook, so that you can hook it off cleanly.

Re: HOWTO: Rear brake pads
I used a pair of snout nose pliers to hook the spring off on the adjuster side, then if you remove the allen "bolts" securing the shoes you can pull off the whole assembly. These bolts basically have a key on the end that fits into a slot in the back plate so you turn them 90 degrees and they pop off.
On re-assembly assemble the cable bracket & the spring on the shoes and fit them to the hub as a unit; it makes life a lot easier.

Crap, there's springs involved? I hate springs...
Ain't got any broken screwdrivers, but knotting a loop in some wire works well hooking the tremolo springs on guitars...
I should see if there's a wikipedia page on drum brakes

Re: HOWTO: Rear brake pads
Yeah, I always fit them together as a unit with the springs and adjuster fitted, on some of these rear handbrake shoe types, there is a spring with a hole in it and a hook that holds the shoe onto the backplate, buggers to take off and fit without that slotted screwdriver....the allen screw type sound too easy
A tip for adjusting the handbrake shoes...when you fit the new shoes, put a mark on the backplate in line with the adjusting screw, makes it easier to locate when you are turning the disc around looking for it.
