Re: Project HaeThere! (Coupé restoration)
Are you sure those rear tyres didn't originate from the front end? maybe the tracking's out and they got dumped on the rear for a bit?

possible. hmm only one way to find out - I'll have a look at the front wheels later.

I must have put the shoes on wrong, but I'm so f*cking sick of those things I don't really want to go there
You could still make arrangements to come up this way with your car and let me have a look at it with you sometime.
Re: Project HaeThere! (Coupé restoration)
Thats a very kind offer of you jasper !! get yourself up there mj

.. ooh are those drugs for me Matron
Re: Project HaeThere! (Coupé restoration)
I've worked out what it is (hopefully "was"). A rusty back plate. How do I know? The markings on the new disc. There's a ring around the drum bit a couple of mm in (before the shoes contact) and there's a thick ring between 1/4" and 1/2" on the inside disc surface. Both of these correlate to the seam between the inner and outer bits of the backplate. I also noticed that a lot of the seam had bulged where it had rusted.
So I took a punch and hammered the inner part in, then took a screwdriver and using the hammer peeled back most of the seam and hammered out all the crumbling swollen its before hammering it flatish. Also put a bit of copper slip over it.
Bingo! It's still not great, but it's a hell of a lot better. I can now hear a sound that was under the brake noise, which sounds like it could well be the dodgy tyres (not too happy about only having 1" of contact area at the rear!) and I can hear the clutch judder better too
But the engine sounds better
I've just looked at servicebox. BLOODY £90 A BACKPLATE?!?!? Sod that!

On another note, anyone got any ideas how I can extend the throttle cable path while retaining the adjustment ability if I can't simply bend the adjuster bracket?

£90 for a back plate is extortionate, you got any breakers near you?

Yep, not for much longer though
The trouble I came against was breakers don't seem to want to sell them separately from the rest of the suspension, imagine how much that'd cost by post...

Screwing the door hinge back together
Try to get the excessive camber sorted. I have no idea about this
Probably end up paying the dealers hundreds to replace every part that's got a bit of rubber on it. And then I'll discover the hub bearing's bent or something daft
Might have a play see if i can get rid of the hiss and buzzing from the stereo too if I can figure out how to get past the boot lining

A 4-way laser do-dah will probably tell you what's up. Ok, it won't be prefect with Kojaks on the back but it should give you some idea.

I took my car in for mot this morning, passed ok, but there is play in the n/s rear transverse link arm, there is a possibility something like that worn out may cause a camber problem.
Check it by jacking the car up at the back and holding the wheel top and bottom, then pull up and down on the wheel, there shouldn't be any movement.
Movement in the trasverse link would alter the camber (the wheel would be at the wrong angle at times). There was quite a bit of movement on mine, I guess it could have been failed.
I priced one up for mine, £9 at my local factors, will replace it tomorrow.
