Rear hub assembly

Post by stevenlizuk »

Hello all again,

Searching the interweb for a rear hub assembly as my back plate has corroded to nothing meaning there's nothing to stabilize the handbrake shoes as their mounting bolts have nothing to get a hold of.
Does the saloon use the same hub assembly as the estate or are they different?
Essentially I'm looking for the whole hub assembly including the backplate and the swivel the stub is mounted on to.

98 2.1td estate with discs on rear (nearside).

Any help?

Cheers
Steve

I have two D8 abs hubs here and it looks like I won't be needing them (postage would be stupid though, they were 20 quid each of ebay anyway).

According to Pervie Sox all the rear disks are the same (saloon, estate, coupe D8&9), just watch for the hub as D9s have more teeth for the abs sensor (There's one listed for without abs too, if that's possible). The swivel pin is a different matter, there seems to be a change during the D8s as it's got one of them RPO code thingies so I won't be able to tell you without the chassis numbers of both yours and the donor car.

I think it's Jasper who keeps saying the hub could just fall off :?

Trust me on this, I've been abusing those things hard recently and they ain't coming out (of mine at least) without serious "persuasion" like a puller

Sorry, I thought you meant the whole stub axle assembly :?

The hub with the wheel bearing in should come off easily, although Matt said his wouldn't move easily, in that case, the bearing inner race has rusted a bit to the shaft and just needs a slide hammer to move it.

It was the fear of the bearing failing and having to buy a new hub that made me think I would just get the whole thing from the scrappy. On a 98 plate mine is one of the later D8s so possibly has the same swivel as the D9 but I'll need to check the chassis number.
I only need the backplate but if the bearing fails trying to get it off it's a bit of a pain, and Pug want £90 for the backplate on it's own!!

Bum!!

Tell me about it, both my backplates look like doilies. The D9 carrier is the same but the abs teeth on the hub are different.

How much do the breakers want for hub, backplate and swivel pin?

Using a slide hammer is the recognised trade practise for removing tight hubs, it bolts onto the hub using the wheel bolts, you then slide the heavy steel weight backwards towards yourself, slamming the steel weight against the slide hammer end, thus pulling the hub off the shaft.

When I did my brother's 406 rear hub bearing last year, I undid the nut, then slid the hub off without any effort, granted, they don't always come off that easy, hence the slide hammer.

Do what is best for you. It's your car.

£48 including the postage but I'm wary of it due to the cost of returning it if it's the wrong one.

Will try locally too, got a good scrappy here but he's a bit light on 406's.
