406 a good bargain?
Hi all,
I'm new to the fourm and owning a 406, I actually have two at the moment. I bought a '98 2.0 Glx last week and the week before a '98 SRi Turbo. I was wondering what bargain 406's people have got? I got the Glx for £275 and the SRi for £200, I'm going to be keeping the Glx, but stripping the SRi for parts to donate to my 205 (Sorry lol) So far I've been quite impressed with the Glx

Some !$#@#% got my near perfect V6 Exec saloon for something like £545, and I had to let a scrap yard take my beloved 2.0T exec estate for £50
On the upside, I bought the V6 exec for £600, bought my dad's 2.0T Exec saloon for £140 and my current V6 coupe cost me just £655

<steve_earwig> I think this forum is more about keeping our cars going with minimal outlay than giving our cars more reason to go bang

It's difficult to put a value on these cars without seeing them, but you can't go far wrong with two for under £500
I won't tell you what mine cost, but at your prices, I could've got one for each month and still had some change
I've got a feeling it'll take me a little while to recover the difference in fuel savings

2002 HDi 2.2 Exec Estate, (2008-12) (wonderful)
2003 HDi 2.2 6-speed Exec Estate (2012-19) (also a gem)
2009 Citroen C5 2.0 HDi VTR+ Estate (godawful heap)
2008 BMW E91 330i touring (great fun - murdered by a reversing SUV)
2007 BMW E91 325i touring (slower smoother quieter)

Re: 406 a good bargain?
Mine was under £1800, but I used my old '94 1.2 Renault Clio Mk I as a trade-in (with a full tank of fuel to increase the trade-in value
)
Sounds like a lot? Nah, my 1999 1.8i LX D9 saloon was in showroom condition - it looked just like a brand new car, save for the plastic wheel trims which were a little tatty, and the exterior temperature sensor (which is optimistic about the weather, reporting up to 50 celcius (and I live in Scotland!)). Only 29,500 miles on the clock too.
Since I bought it, I've put 15in Peugeot 307 Rapier alloys on it (used, and a little scuffed here and there, but still a damn site better than the steels that were on it originally), and it has never been in for any kind of repair.
It's a gorgeous car, comfortable, reliable, and a lot of fun to drive. Bargain? You bet.

Re: 406 a good bargain?
I did a run to Portsmouth in the volvo of around 400 miles taking it over to the next x-thousand miles and I remember feeling a bit dissapointed like I'd 'wasted' the miles
I think if we get a low-miler we somehow want to keep or preserve it that way (maybe it's just me)
My Sister has a 4 year old Audi A3 with 14,000 miles on it from new
Having said all this old carp there is the school of thought that low mileages are not always a sign of excellent mechanicals

Re: 406 a good bargain?
Just read your post again, didn't realise it was a D9. Thats not so bad. It seems like one in a million. As long as you know you won't be able to sell it for nearly as much

16K and still running fine, well yes. You'd certainly hope so.
160K and still running fine... er... more or less fine, anyway... that suggests it's a solid car. Still does 50mpg!
Course since I bought mine for 400 quid a year and a half back, minor things have started to go pear-shaped. But I reckon that's cos this city is full of speed bumps and I never slow down
180K on the wife's Omega and it runs smoother than mine
