Hmmm, not sure what to think about this hair-brained scheme.

I mean, who actually can afford to buy a brand new motor just now ?

Maybe just another ploy to get us all into more debt

The problem with this scheme, is that people that own ten year old cars are unlikely to be able to jump straight up to a brand new car, possibly, if you had more money, you would jump up to a later model a couple of years old.

AFAIK in Germany it also applies to the "nearly new" cars found in car supermarkets, up to 1 year old, that's what I was hoping for. No intention of trading the pug though, I was thinking of putting in my 16 year old suzuki jeep worth about £700

Most dealers are specifying that You must have owned said vehicle for 2 years minimum to stop people picking up shitters on ebay then pushing them into the local dealer for £2000.

I think the majority ofthe car buying public aren't as savvy as people like us on motoring forums and are likely to be under the impression that anything under £2,000.00 now is actually worthless.

Be interesting to see the effects on the used market soon :|

I work in the Motor trade, for a large contract hire and leasing company so i'd like to think we're on the ball with most things. What we have found out is that the following conditions need to be met in order to qualify for the "scrapping allowance"

The car needs to have been owned for a minimum of 12 months

The car needs to have a current MOT, or current at date of ordering the new car

The car needs to be currently taxed, or again, taxed at date of order.

What we have found out, is the car does not have to drive, or be roadworthy (although the current MOT would indicate that it should be!)

My point is, i asked the question to a number of our supplying delaers if someone was to bring (by whatever means) a car to you, with no engine, gearbox, interior etc etc would it still qualify?

The answer is yes, there is no reason why it wont, after all, these cars are not being broken for spares, they are ALL being crushed into cubes, so no money will be lost by it not having the saleable parts left on it.

The cars are being collected from the dealers by approved vehicle disposal people and never ever touch the road again.

Reason for this post is i was looking at buying the wife a new car, her 98 focus 2.0 is worth more in parts (ie coilovers, 17" alloys and good Eagle F1 tyres, mint interior and a lightly tuned low mileage zetec engine, so thinking outside the box, i could sell the bits off it then take the rest down to the dealer????) than it is as a whole car.

No ones done it yet, but theres no reason why you couldnt.

Taking that to its (il)logical conclusion, all you need to have is a chassis plate with current MOT and tax...

Hey, would I have got 4 grand for this?

:arrowu: @Stevie boy

Thinking about it, who's paying to dispose of all the old snotters that get traded in?

Also, if they all get squished then second hand used parts will run short and the prices will go up meaning the cost of running your old car will go up :? :frown:

I won't pretend to know what happens when you squish a whole car and then melt? it but I can see as far as there being an abundace of mixed materials in the melting pot so how much use is a load of un-pure metal like that (unless I'm missing something).

My understanding is, the "scrapping agent" removes all vital fluids and accounts for them (ie oil, gear oil, coolant, fuel, brake fluid, screenwash), battery and tyres, then the remaining is cubed.

As for what happens after that im in the dark.

At no time are items removed from the car for future sale (like a breaker would for example) - shame really as it could keep other cars going for longer, but thats the short sighted government for you.

The collection agents are approved by the Govt, and invoice them accordingly. The collection agents send the certificate of destruction back to the dealer who then uses it to claim the £1000 back form the govt. A copy of the certificate goes to the new cars manufacturer who pays the dealer £1000 as well.

Imagine the scrap yard seeing decent CD players, Air bags, Compressors, Turbo's, Pumps, and thinking..."Ooo better not remove those and sell them on ebay cos we'd be in twouble"....... :|

I can't help thinking of someone buying a new Audi or whatever, noticing something strange in the paintwork, and then being able to make out a Mondeo badge in the metalwork

Collapse of the used car industry works fine for me, long as they don't scrap all the D8 estates ^^

Hmm, maybe in years to come our 406s will be uber-rare curiosities ^_^
