Loctited calliper bolts

Post by swiss »

Right, so I'm trying to undo these bolts but they're loctited in good and proper:

Image

I've already busted my 18mm socket and me chisel trying to break the seal. Suggestions, if you please?

[EDIT] OK... is a torch really the best way to do this? a) I don't have one and b) I'm liable to set myself on fire :(

Have you got another socket?

Make your ratchet or better still your T bar, longer, stick a tube over the end and extend the length of your bar....leverage and all that.

If the bolts move a little, soak the threads in WD40 and leave it a while. If you can see the threads sticking out towards the disc, soak them in WD40 as well.

I've had run-ins with those before. Nip to Halfords and get yourself an impact driver and if you ain't already got one, a big (2lb+) hammer. Couldn't imagine trying to work on the car without mine, even needed to use it to get the coil pack off after I nearly bust a quality allen key...

The most you need is an impact socket, like I said, make the bar longer.

One other thing, have you tried taking the discs off without taking off that bit of the caliper?
Sometimes with those type, there is enough room to move the disc past the caliper bit. (Not always).

Decent set of impact sockets and a good 90cm breaker bar 8) among the best things Santa ever dropped off :supafrisk:
Only ever failed to undo one of these once. (I turned all the others anti-clockwise).
2002 HDi 2.2 Exec Estate, (2008-12) (wonderful)
2003 HDi 2.2 6-speed Exec Estate (2012-19) (also a gem)
2009 Citroen C5 2.0 HDi VTR+ Estate (godawful heap)
2008 BMW E91 330i touring (great fun - murdered by a reversing SUV)
2007 BMW E91 325i touring (slower smoother quieter)

Right then, job's a good'n.

Steve from next-door pointed out that if I locked the steering over, I'd have enough room to actually get a bar on it. Borrowed a four-foot scaffold and bent me brand-new tommy bar (:() but got the damn bolts off (:D).

Now , just got to do the air and fuel filters. Of course, the air filter supplied was the wrong part - and the old one seemed to have exploded in the intake box  Might explain the weird engine sound, I spose.

Meanwhile, the cleverly-designed engine bay requires that one's hands be inserted through tiny gaps in the pipe work to unscrew the fuel filter. The filter has to be turned sideways to get it in/out. Thus I had to design some sophisticated method of delivery to get the cleaner in to the filter unit once it was positioned under the port, ready to be screwed in.

Gentlemen, I present to you a foot of garden hose jub clipped to a funnel :)

New new air filter tomorrow, two replacement tyres - screw in one of them and spare flat as a pancake of course - and then a sodding good Italian tune up down the M27. w00t!

Only now I'm jealous and want to do the brakes on the 6

Well done :D

I have a 2 foot 6, 3/4 inch drive bar for undoing those tight caliper bolts (amongst other things), I also have a 1/2 inch drive ratchet type attachment to give me, in effect, a 2 foot 6 ratchet bar.My Peugeot Expert has the same type of tight caliper bolts, the only thing that will shift them is my 3/4 inch drive bar.
