So what 'appened was...

Post by swiss »

OK, so new brakes, filters and an oil change on the 2.5TD Omega auto. Took it out for a good thrash on the M27 en-route to the MOT station.

I was in the fast lane and the van in front of me slowed, then sped up again. Partly out of wanting to keep the revs up, partly out of habit with the manual, I dumped it down a gear.

Next thing I know, the tacho is off the scale (the ECU is supposed to limit the plant to 5k) and the throttle is refusing to play. I ninja lane-changed to the outside but couldn't get the speed back up.

So I threw it in to the hard shoulder with me hazards on and went in to fault diagnostic mode. I saw the temperature gauge was way past the red line and reasoned the car had engaged limp mode.

I struggled on to the MOT station and sure enough, it passed the emissions test. However.

As I left, the temperature sprang right back up. I pulled in to a park and gave it half an hour to cool off. When I started the electrics, the gauge read 90 or so, perfectly acceptable. But sure enough, once I pulled away it went right to the line again.

Having had it outside the house cooling for three hours, I topped up the water (the computer was complaining and, yes, the level was pretty damn low). Took it off for a test drive at 30mph and... the temp hit the red line in under two minutes and car started limping again.

So, what have I done? No leaks apparent, cooling fans kick in just fine... did I kill the thermostat? Please, God, tell me I didn't :|

Have you checked the coolant level to see if it's dropped again? (Silly question  )
If the level's still ok it's thermostat or water pump I reckon.
Hey just had a thought, take it out for a run & see if the coolant hoses are hard. I hope the head gasket is ok :|

Thermostat going probably wouldn't cause it to overheat /too/ quickly from cold. My money's on the water pump I'm afraid

We haven't had the aux belt done since we've had it. Actually we hadn't done anything beyond washing it (and that begrudgingly).

I only did the oil change because the sump plug was dripping and I thought "A-ha! What I'll do is, right, I'll pull the plug and refit it with a new washer, not like the oil isn't way overdue for a change anyway".

Course when I went to refit the plug it turned out the threads were chewed up on the sump drain hole. Methinks someone was over enthusiastic with the old extension bar in the past. Luckily the MOT tech failed to notice it (nor did he notice the flat spare) but I think when I have the money to spare I'll replace the sump pan and gasket. Right now, I ain't gonna waste all that expensive oil ^_^

No, it has one chain for the camshaft and another for the IP.

It occurs to me that probably didn't re-connect the oil sensor after I was done. Now, whether this senses level or temperature I don't know but hey, fingers crossed that's all it'll need for a fix0r

Apparently GM favour plastic vanes in their water pumps, which melt when your water overheats. Which is, well, pretty goddam stupid I'd say. You can get a brass vane variant, but you know that ain't gonna come cheap...

It seems like you forced an early failure maybe of the water pump upon your "Italian tune-up" :(

I hope you can fix it without too much troub£e :(

My understanding of plastic water pumps is that they separate from the shaft and stop rotating. VW's have suffered the same issue in recent years.

At least you wont have to replace the cambelt whilst doing the pump, and I'm guessing the water pump's looking at you when you pop the bonnet? albeit burried under a ton of other crap I suppose :|

Good luck Swissy.

Cheers Welton :P

One of the guys on the Omega forum linked me a PDF from Landrover. So I'll be using Landrover documents to fix a BMW engine mounted in a Vauxhall. My head hurts...

Most Vaux water pumps are around 25-30 quid, thought of course the one I need is 85. Figures.

Unfortunately I need to remove the radiator first before I can slack the belt. Woo, I get to pay for new coolant as well. The pump is driven on the same shaft as the viscous fan, whatever that does, but once the radiator is off it's a case of unbolt and withdraw the pump. Refitting is a the opposite of removal, etc.

Bad news is no local dealers have the pump in stock. Found a website that does it for less than half RRP with next day delivery, so fingers crossed a) it'll turn up tomorrow and b) it won't be sh1te. Meanwhile I still have to get out of bed at sparrow fart to ferry the missus to work :sigh:

OK, dogs are being twats, time for walkies. Later peeps.

Whats the Omega like to drive?

We have had a few Commodores and they have always been the "poorer" cousin of the Omega. They share a fair few bits, but have the good stuff engineered out like the proper IRS and the nicer interiors - I suppose the upside is that the Omega never came with a V8!

Don't mind my one - RWD is fun :P

Swiss, if the viscous fan is held on by a big nut.....note that it is left hand thread. It would be much nicer if it just had 4 small nuts holding it on.

If yours has the big left hand nut and it won't undo.....use a big punch on one corner of the nut to shock it loose, usually they just need a quick, sharp, crack.

The viscous fan is oil filled and makes the fan turn faster, the faster the engine turns, and at tickover, the fan is not using engine power.

Good luck with it all :D

Scary. Probably because I've never driven anything pokier than my 406, but you put your foot down in the Mig and it goes like a bloody rocket. Power steering is insanely light, you can drag that huge great tractor around with one little finger. Brakes, now that they've been replaced, are A1 supar. Can't comment on the manual but the autobox is pretty damn smooth, just a bit weird to feel it shifting gear all by itself. Interior's smart, but not to my taste. Everything just seems too chunky compared to mine and visibility's a good bit worse than the 6. But it's very comfy and her indoors' is a CDX so it's all mod cons short of leather seats. Everything is powered and either moves or heats up or both.

Lucky to get 32 mpg, but you have fun doing it. The only thing that's ever pulled away from me is a 206, presumably filled with rocket fuel.

@ Jasper:

OK, but what does the fan actually do? Thanks for the advice, dealer is wanting 150+ for labour so despite what the wife thinks, I'm doing this one myself. Luckily both my neighbours are skilled mechanics - one ex-pro, one amateur - so if I get stuck I'll have one of them parachuted in.

Of course, having paid six quid for next day delivery before 1500, they now tell me it's 2-3 days to get the part in to their warehouse. Ho-hum. Guess I'm playing taxi for the rest of the week.
