I needed to tow a friends car today, but couldn't.
I got the tow hook attachment out of the boot, and removed the flap from the rear bumper, but the tow hook/eye thing wouldn't fit.
It fits fine into the socket on the front of the car though.
Is there supposed to be a different attachment for the rear of the car?

Re: towing attatchment
I think it's the same eye for the front a back, haven't tried my back one for ages but I seem to remember it was dodgy about 5 years ago when I towed a series 2 landrover with it
. I wonder whether the rear socket suffers the effects of all the crap thrown up behind the bumper and goes rusty??

Re: towing attatchment
I've had the same result on a couple of 406s. I hammer it in hard then use a breaker bar to screw it in
<steve_earwig> I think this forum is more about keeping our cars going with minimal outlay than giving our cars more reason to go bang

I might give that a go then.mjb wrote:I've had the same result on a couple of 406s. I hammer it in hard then use a breaker bar to screw it in
It does look a bit rusty underneath, and the eye is just a little bit too gig to push in on its own.
Re: towing attatchment
yes the rear towing socket on the rear is crap, it goes rusty and then rips the thread clean out when you use it if its rusted at all!
was towing a car with a rope using my old 406 saloon (D9 T reg) 2 years ago and moved off and took up the slack without a jolt, got 50 mtrs and the eye flew straight out of the socket and nearly hit the car i was towing! it ripped the thread clean out of the hole it was in that bad condition from all of the road muck, and no it was not cross threaded or anything like that.

Just been and had a look, and there is no thread at all in the hole on the back. I guess it's rusted up, and been used before and taken the thread clean out.
