hello all ive spent all today trawling around my local car garages for another 406, I'm getting a bit fidgety and i want to find a newer higher spec one and i had no luck the only 2 i found was a Y reg in diablo red it was a 2.0LX Auto and it was HORRID! the drivers side rear quater and door was creased the sill was dished in and was pinching the rear door shut, the front and rear bumpers were f**ked and the roof looked like a ploughed field, hardly any service history, very high mileage a snip a £1800! i also found a white D9 GLX Hdi on a 51 plate, it looked immaculate not a mark on it, good hisotry just 55,000 on the clock all for £2000 i was seriously tempted until i looked under the bonnet and everything was twised and bodged up reapired the chassis ends where crumpled the front panel was crooked and just everything was held on with cable ties or wood screws so i thought i better check the boot floor and that was the same story the rear panel had been banged out with a hammer but the spare wheel well was still crushed and the spare was wedged in there, its had a massive crash and been bodged back together and to make the gaps good again all they have done is twist the bonnet so it shuts flush on the front all i know is HOW do these people get away with selling cars like this for those prices i mean it takes a keen eye to spot out the white one but the red on was an out and out shed inside and out but up for so high, then i thought perhaps a 407 and get a bit of finance ive been loooking on ebay and autotrader and £5000-£6000 well get you a belter, bargain of the day an 06 reg base model HDi with 45,000 on the clock nearly £9,000 from carcraft what an unproductive day so i drove to canary wharf had a beer in the cat and canary in west india quay to think about the shocking crap ive seen today! why are nice examples of these cars so hard to find? (rhetorical question i know the answer) just sad reality that good examples of these cars are in decline

(thats a lot cheaper than whats written on the windscreen in the warehouse but still too dear in my opinion)

Re: RIP OFF!
Gotta say I don't trust any of those car supermarket places (except Ron Skinner & Sons, they're good!), but especially not Carcraft or that type of place. Blatently lied to in the past by one of them.
For a car that's more than a few years old your best bet is to buy private, actually I bet you could pick up a cracking late 406 or early 407 at an auction?

Re: RIP OFF!
oh yeah definatly, there are hundreds of lovely 406's and 407's on ebay and autotrader for a good price i dont care how far i have to travel to find the right car, it was just very infuriating that people can sell these old sheds! i may have to try the auctions theres a new auction site round the corner from where i live so i might have a look there, i know my 406 aint perfect but bloody hell i didnt realise just how lucky i was to find one on autotrader, take a chance and travel 50 miles and it to turn out good ahh dear well ill update if i find any good ones today

Re: RIP OFF!
I've done very well buying off ebay - it's the cars I've got off here that have given me trouble!
<steve_earwig> I think this forum is more about keeping our cars going with minimal outlay than giving our cars more reason to go bang
