yeah, it never sounds that great when its cold, its a lot quieter once its warmed up, dont know why its like that, just hope whatevers causing it isnt really expensive to fix when it finally breaks.
Sounds like it could be the bottom pulley, that's how mine started - it adds a ticking noise to the proceedings on start up for the first few minutes.

Actually I always thought my HDi was not all that much more noisy when cold.

You don't want it to break as the aux belt will come off and can damage the timing belt.

You don't need to remove the timing belt to change the bottom pulley.

Well, it's gone in this morning. The reception guy wasn't sure whether upon removing the cam balancer thing to replace the gasket would disturb the head gasket - i.e. he wasn't sure whether the head bolts would have to be removed. But he would ask the mechanic later whether that's the case. Anyone know?

Other than that, he said all being well, the car would be done by end of today...

Welp, got the car back. Total damage: £443

Things done:

Cambelt replaced
Water pump replaced
Aux belt replaced
Cam cover gasket replaced.. or rather new sealant applied
Vaccum pump oil seals replaced as they had to remove that to remove the camshaft - they reckon that's where the oil was leaking from, actually
Tracking done
Cooling system flushed
Driveshaft oil seals replaced

Now, they have looked at the bottom mount, but upon inspection, they said the rubber bush was not worn. They did mention that the bolts on the gearbox side mount were "loose" so everything was tightened up. However, I still have that annoying grumble when in very low revs (<1500rpm) in a high gear - i.e. 40mph in 5th gear, foot down, caused the car to go grumbbbblllleeee but clears just before it hits the turbo. I am still not sure whether this is "normal" or not. Maybe the engine is just under labour.

They put down 6 hours work for £280 + cost of parts + VAT

That doesn't sound too painful to me. Not sure about the grumbling, mine just wobbles...

Yeah, S'not too bad really.

<1500rpm in a high gear will make it grumble it's almost labouring with low oil pressure too :|

5th gear on the HDi pretty much kills the thing at anything below 50/55 mph.
