406 atf
Hi, I'm a new member and would be grateful for some advice. Here's the problem, the car (406 auto W reg)is not pulling properly and I think the ATF is low, I would like to check it and fill it up but I've no idea how to do this. would take it to a garage but money is very tight. has anyone out there got any sugestions on how I can do this myself? Thanks for listening.

Re: 406 atf
Hi, welcome.
To check the ATF, firstly, start up the engine, move the gearchange through all of the options (P to 1) a few times, then let the engine tickover in Park, pull out the dipstick, wipe it clean then replace it, take it out again and read the level (if it's cold read the cold level, if hot read the hot level), the fluid should be a nice red colour or close to it, if it's black you have problems.
If required, top up the level by squirting new fluid down the dipstick hole (half a litre at a time)then repeat the level check.
You will need a Dexron type fluid.

You sure there's a dipstick?

Re: 406 atf
My post indicated the most common way of checking and refilling the ATF.If there isn't a dipstick, then the level is checked by electronics and I've only seen a couple of automatics in 39 years without a dipstick, these have had an electronic level indicator, the last one being a Renault.
If it doesn't have a dipstick, then tell our friend how to check his level.

There's no dipstick according to Servicebox.
The D9 Haynes says the 4HP20 box has a dipstick and can be filled through that hole, but the AL4 doesn't and needs to be filled with the car level until it comes out of the filler plug hole

Wife's Omega has no dipstick. You just pull the plug on the box and fill till it overflows. Re-plug, fire up engine and run the gearbox up and down the range to circulate the oil, then turn it off and again fill the box till it overflows. Job done, apparently...
