But that goes against my economy driving regime

I had to fill up earlier (range left was just a row of dashes). 999km (~600 miles), furthest I ever went on one tank in any car! 64 liters went in, so that's a shade over 6.4l/100km or 44mpg in old money. This is still short journeys around this little town here, averaging well below 30mph. And my car is broke?
I gave it a bootfull earlier, things behind don't actually disappear but...
I was looking at the egr earlier as a preamble to blocking it. Or I should say, I was trying to look at it - I can't even get my mirror at an angle so I can see what I'm doing. Obviously if it was stuck open there'd be no point in disconnecting the vacuum solenoid as it'd still smoke, so really I'd have to block the thing itself. Then I noticed the pipe from the egr to the inlet manifold has a water jacket around it, on the pipe leading into the heater matrix - is this this mythical (not actually) electrical preheater? So not wanting to block this off!
