Rear pad squeal shims - que?

Why is there no forum for brakes?

Anyway, I changed to my winter tyres today and while I was there I thought I'd see why the rear pads were squealing. Couldn't see owt, all well copperslipped and sexy but I thought I'd finally fit the squeal shims I got after everyone else on here seemed to have them. Ok, plenty of clearance 'cos the car's done 30,000 km since I changed the disks and put new pads in. Just one question - which way round do they go? There's one side shiny, the other side with what looks like Teflon on. I stuck that towards the pads but I suppose I could be wrong. Probably am wrong, thinking about it. Or does it even matter?

Never heard of those before but seem like a good idea. Wifey's brakes go squealy squealy, you see. Goggling isn't producing results, at least not before I got bored and gave up. Where might one buy these?

We've all got 4 wheel bearings on the way out - it's just a question of degree

As it happens, the Dogmobile is in need of a little TLC in the rear pads dept. if the graunching I'm hearing on anything other than gentle braking is anything to go by So two questions:

Any recommendation on pads / supplier(s)?

I assume these shims are not included as std. - are they worth the extra?

Ooh, sounds like rusty disk time The sliding pins are fond of seizing up on the rears, mjb did a how to somewhere...

I dunno, Lockheed, Lucas Girling, anything branded I s'pose. I'll get back to you on the shims, I'll know as soon as I stick the brakes on tomorrow morning after I reverse out into the street here eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!

The shims fit shiny side to the pad, the teflon type stuff is the anti squeal bit.

Doggy, and Swiss, look out for some Ferodo Premium pads, the Premium type tend to have pins, shims and clips in the box as standard, but check first.They cost a bit more, but as they usually have all the extras in the box, they are good value.Failing that, Mintex are as good as any.Most factors will supply a pad fitting kit for less than the dealers.

That's what I wanted to know. I thought it was oscillating pads that cause the squeal, so the teflon would be best against them Oh well, another wee job tomorrow.

I can recommend Bosch pads.Part no:0986494055 these should have all the fixings.If not part no:0986494000 definetly does have pads and shims in the box.
