cant time engine up, please help
after a long time with the car sitting idle i finally decided to buy a complete second hand cylinder head (after timing jumped and snapped the cam), due to funds and time the car hasn't been touched but want it running again now, started to do a strip down as if doing a timing belt but when i came to time it up to take the belt off the engine locks before it reaches the timing marks,i realise the cam will be a bus ride out anyway but was concerned over the crank to pump timing, i think i could sus the crank timing out (screwdriver in the injector hole) to get tdc but how would i time the pump up? how would i know if its on number one etc, any help would be great , its a d8 1.9td by the way

Hi, If you are taking the head off, don't bother with the timing until you are ready to fit the other head, then you can set tdc by turning the crank until number 1 is at tdc and fit a pin in the hole underneath the starter motor into the crank to lock it.
The cam timing is easy, turn the camshaft until you can screw a bolt through the hole in the cam pulley into the head (8mm thread).
Likewise the injection pump timing, turn the pulley until the holes in the pulley line up with bolt holes in the pump housing,(again 8mm thread) then screw 2 bolts in to lock the pulley.
Fit the head with the tensioner locked with the spring tension off, then fit the belt, take out the bolts and flywheel locking pin, slacken the tensioner bolts until the tensioner springs against the belt, lock up the tensioner bolts and turn the engine by hand 2 turns, then try to fit all the bolts and the locking pin, if they fit, all is well.
