I had a turbo exec for a while - same car but without the vile trim My dad's currently got one too (going to put it in my garage tomorrow to start work on it) and there's a few others here with them including Teamster

Funny you should say that, mjb has just started diagnosing the same on his Dad's tubby! Watch this space as they say...
It's possible that the boost actuator rod is stuck, can you hear the turbo spooling up?

First thing to do is grab hold of the large flexi-pipe going down from the charge pipe to the intercooler, and rev the engine hard from idle by pulling on the throttle body. If the pipe collapses inward, the turbo's seized and yo'll need to recon (there's a howto on here) or replace
Also give the car a good service and check things like the coolant level
