Jumps out of gear

Post by Mick »

Hello 1st post.

I have just had my clutch replaced in my 406 2lt HDI, since then it has started to jump out of 5th gear when i take my foot off the acelerator.
I have had it back to the garage but they say nothing is wrong. I have also noticed that when i apply the acelerator or take my foot off the acelerator there is a noticeable amount of movement of the gear stick especially in 3rd and 5th. I haven't check the gearbox mountings yet. Could it be something like this that has not been aligned properly after the clutch change?
I've done 130,000 and there was no problem before the change.
Any advice?
Thanks
Mick

I'd suggest shoving a jack under the gearbox to take the weight, then check the gearbox mount. That's the easy suggestion.

The other possibility that springs to mind (I'm presuming cable linkage here) is they've not put one of the gear linkages in the linkage holder properly. Basically the cable behind the ball joints should be restrained by a bracket and a U-clip. The U-clips can be removed from on top with a big screwdriver (it's the one on the left operating the swinging arm that you want to check) but they'll be a royal pain in the rear to re-fit from above, which you will want to do, because the easy way to put them in needs the subframe off the car

Also, check to see if the linkage cables are twisted around each other...

Please let me know if you get to the bottom of this - after doing my clutch I've noticed 'neutral' is a fair bit from pointing straight up

I reckon they've damaged something or not fitted something back properly, maybe even a bolt missing from a mounting bracket. The box is moving about and yanking itself out of gear.

Get it back there and complain, it's a horrid job to change the HDi clutch so I wouldn't be surprised if something got missed/damaged/left out in the process.
