Missing Locking wheel nut

Post by 2chronicles »

My 406 110 pug failed its MOT today on 3 items one being a missing locking wheel nut on the front nearside I was shocked as I had not noticed this before I am more alarmed that I had approx 5 weeks ago had a new tyre fitted and tyres swapped round that involved the removal of my spare wheel (following a blow out)from the nearside front and its new tyre swapped over to the alloy wheel and refitted a new tyre on the offside and the part worn on to the spare steel wheel.
this is the last occasion I can recall when wheels were removed and refitted .
I have then since travelled some 100 miles approxomately 600 of which was towing a single axle caravan.
I am of to the local depot of a well known National Tyre company in the morning to make them aware of this discovery.
Questions I have are (1)is it possible for a locking wheel nut/bolt to have worked loose and dropped out ? (2) what are /or have been the dangers and risk of having only 3 wheel bolts holding my nearside front wheel on (3) is it possible the locking wheel nut could have been stolen? by another Peugeot owner or are all the locking wheel nuts individual to that car? I dont know what the cause has been but Mrs H is most concerned and wants an explanantion , any offerings on this matter ? much appreciated.

That's a pain :(

1. Not if it was torqued up properly.
2. Minimal, unless you drive like a nutter.
3. They'd be nuts. fnar fnar. They're all meant to be different, so it would have taken them months, maybe years to find you car.

I'm thinking the other three were torqued up ok, then whoever it was forgot they hadn't done the locking one.

Chances are they couldn't find your locking nut key so left it off in case you didn't know where it was either. Check your glovebox, spare wheel well, under the passenger seat, ashtray, etc in case they left it there
<steve_earwig> I think this forum is more about keeping our cars going with minimal outlay than giving our cars more reason to go bang
