Newbie to the site

Hi I have just joind this site, however i have owned a 406 for 6 years now my old (1998 2.0 petrol) is still going strong on 175000 miles.

only problems i have had with it is the suspension springs. I have now had 3 snap over the years.


But what i would really like to know and a major reason for joining was to ask what people thought of the HDI engines.

Are they relaible and does mileage matter. Reason i ask i am looking to change my partners 306 for a 406 hdi estate. i have seen some with high mileage i think one had around 260k. SHould i be put off by this or are they fine if the service history is there???

your thoughts and opinions would be gratefully received

2.0 HDI engines, in my experience, are pretty good beasts. Quite reliable, given the regular servicing. Taxis use them all the time and do astronomical miles, which is a testament to their reliability.

2.2 HDI engines have issues with their anti-pollution systems - but that's nothing to do with the engine, just a "feature" the engine comes with.

Hi & welcome.
I`ve had my 2003/53 2.0 hdi 110 se estate for nearly 3 & a half yrs now.It was my dads company car for 3 yrs & 56k miles.
I had it re-mapped to 140 bhp when i got it,& it now has 115k miles on it.I find it good on fuel,enough power(even when it was 110)never let me down.
The only issues i`ve had are electrical.Had an engine sensor replaced,& used to get "anti pollution system fault" a few times with the electric fuel pump cutting out.But traced that all that to some dirty fuel i was getting from a lorry driving friend.Since i`ve only been putting pump fuel in,its been fine.
There is a lot of talk on here about the pollution message,& "lift"pumps.I service mine every 10k miles.
On another forum i`m on,they dont rate the HDI`s,much perfering the 1.9TD,or 2.1TD.
But my view is,those engines were replaced by the HDI 10 yrs ago now.We cant keep driving old cars.You have to move to the common rail engines sooner or later.

Cambelts are every 96k miles or 7 years. Good thing with HDIs is that cambelt failures are not catasprophic as it snaps the rocker followers before any piston/valve damage occurs.

I'd imagine the pistons hitting the valves are what breaks the followers, so if the engine's doing 5k when it happens the results could be less favorable.

Providing it's been regularly serviced and faults repaired as necessary then an HDi will go on forever, just like the old XUDs. The trouble is this isn't always the case...
