Depends on the design of lower mount. Some engines have the bush with a metal sleeve which ain't going to be fun, but my earlier ES9J4 and dad's tubby have just the rubber bushes in the mount, and they're doable in situ with a home-made press and some fairy liquid. Getting the rubber-only ones out is easy too - just a screwdriver is needed to lever it out

Finally! Something that's not excessively difficult on my car!

I am back on the road!

Alan took the driveshafts out in the end, cleaned up the mess I made in the mount, greased it up and pressed the new bush in. Only took 2 hours and £92 quid (+VAT). It took me three hours just to knock the old bush out.

The car seems to drive much better with less vibrations and gear changes are somehow much smoother. Could be the fact that the gearbox oil was replaced. Or the fact that local roads are made out of sheet ice right now and I was driving like a granny

Now I seriously need to wash the thing and tidy it up inside. Too many things rolling around inside!

My dad said that his bottom mount went on his 106 and he just took a load of No Nails type stuff and stuffed the whole of the bush with it without replacing a thing. A bodge job but it lasted him a good few years already.

On a side note, there's something satisfying about getting into a 406 after being forced to drive something else, like my mum's diesel Clio or my dad's 106. It's almost like coming home.

Just had mine changed at th e same garage, Lintells of Glastonbury 01458 833561. What a pleasure it is to find a proper old fashioned garage, and a peugeot specialist to. Thanks to cj for the tip.

Changing the bottom mount has made the car hugely better to drive. The cost was two hours labour with the engine oil and gear oil changed for £111 inc. vat. I did get the mount myself as i had crazy ideas about doing it myself. Beyond doing in the drive in my opinion.

Nice one. I remember the car felt like new when I had mine done, gearchanges and on/off throttle moves were much nicer.
