Tappety engine...

Over the last month or so my car has started to sound really tappety.

Now, it has been serviced with all the usual items etc so the oil is fairly fresh.

Having youtubed 'HDi Crankshaft' I *THINK* that the crankshaft pulley is my problem.

Trouble is when accelerating hard (Ie, above 2500-3000rpm it also sounds like my exhaust is blowing somewhere near the front section (Manifold, Downpipe, Flexi etc)

So not sure if this is also the sound the pulley makes when engine rpms increase.

It basically really sounds like a tractor... MPG has also dropped (But could be due to cold starts and idleing while de-ice/snow my car)

Also, I can sometimes smell exhaust fumes in the cabin when first starting etc.


Now im too minds whether to keep the car anyway as im getting bored so if its gunna need money im gunna part ex it

Mine sounds like that, apparently I've damaged the injectors by using the crap diesel they have here

When the bottom pulley starts playing up you do get a tappety noise (especially from cold) this noise can easily be confused with valve noise but it isn't. The bottom pulley will so this for ages but then fairly quickly go down hill over 2 or 3 days ti the point where the noise is shocking and you know you shouldn't be driving it.

Smelly cabin would point to the downpipe flex section coupled with a gruff kinda noise.

Shame you're getting bored but I don't suppose it helps having another (seemingly less troublesome) 406 in toe.

Yeh its happens from cold and doesnt really get much better.

Those are rough prices inc labour etc.

Best part of £810 there alone

...Granted it would only probably need the front brakes and flexi for the MOT in June...

Just gunna be a lot of money to get it right and I cant help thinking im not prepared to spunk that kinda money into this. Sure economical but my T5 was going 21-23mpg on my commute and the pug is 'only' doing 36-38mpg

Just losing interest sadly, maybe due to the lack of things to do to it mods wise, I mean you can only really remap it. Retrofitting cruise is a pig, Leather is best part of £200 etc etc...

Just kinda bored of her and keep looking back at Volvos and maybe something Jap or German

Bruce T my 406 is for sale Only thing my Pug needs is tax end of Jan .Everything works. Shame to see it go to a trader . But really cant be arsed to sell it. Have only advertised it on here.

I have spent thousands in 7 years of ownership. As you have a 406. I would suggest taking mine for a drive. It does not drive like a 406.

My 110 hdi has had a genuine Pug bottom pulley fitted and i still get a tappety noise under load (usually accelerating gently in 2nd and 3rd gear), my flexi has also cracked (new flexi and cat in the boot awaiting fitment), and im 100% certain the tappety noise is the downpipe blowing under load.

Also when you drive with the window down you cant hear it, only when the windows are closed (probably because the downpipe chuffing is against the bulkhead?

Im hopefully going to change it this coming week and hopefully it will silence the noise.

Don't forget the HDi's rattle through 2000 - 3000 rpm, this was discussed at length on here and we concluded most make this clattering pinking type noise which stops instantly at 3000 rpm when the extra fuel is added by the 3rd piston of the HP pump.

The noise on mine is at idle and I cant hear it once moving.

With the windows down with say, wall on the side of the road etc and doing 30-40mph I can hear the hissing sound of the bust exhaust.

The exhaust is typical blowing sound.

Add those too up and doesnt sound too good, although could just be the diesel noise to someone who doesnt have another one to compare too, LoL.

The rattle from 2000-3000rpm is not audible on my car (Due to above) but I can hear this on the estate and as said, is normal practice.

If im honest ive lost interest and can't be bothered to spend hours pissing about with rusty bolts and nuts or struggling to get my hand to move something etc.

Id rather pay someone these days with better tools, 4 post ramp etc.

Im probably going to part-exchange for a BMW 318IS Coupe at the moment

If the HDi 90 Urban MPG is 38mpg and on my commute im getting about 36mpg (Ie, less 2 than actual figures but my commute is stop start all the time)

Then a car that would do 26mpg id guestamate would do say 24mpg

Very rough above, mind.

Working that out, the BMW 318 would cost about 5p more per mile than the Peugeot.

Which over the last 3 months of commuting with the same cost (£) of fuel put in would be about 260-300 miles LESS in the BMW.

So about 80 miles less amount JUST doing my commute.

So that kinda puts me off getting BMW due to the increase fuel costs.

Cons for the Peugeot are the fact its going to need about £800 to get it running pretty spot on for the next 24-36k (bar a service) which would be about 2-3 years of trouble free driving etc.

But to recoup those cost id have to keep it for that period.

Im already kinda bored of it... I dont know. I always get bored of cars and want something else.

The BMW 318IS Coupe can look awesome with some sublte mods and is a nice free revving petrol engine, RWD etc.

I just really cant make up my mind whether I want to sell my Pug and get something Petrol and 'fun' again?

Heart wants the Bemmer... Head is saying get the pug running right and run it for another 12 months minimum to recoup some costs and get a "better" car when im earning more money and older (25 this year).

Maybe I just need 'fall in love' with my pug and now ive come to terms with it need working and looking at Petrol again... i kinda need to keep the Pug for running costs.

Maybe you could do the work on the 406 in stages over the next 6 months or so?

I bought a W reg 318i SE saloon about 2 years ago for her indoors. It was immaculate and fully serviced but it was sh*t. The front suspension wishbones are aluminum and the mounting bushes were worn and sent the car darting about all over the place, it spoilt the whole drive would have cost £300.00 and, coupled with a leaking gearbox output bearing seal, and a curious drive line shunt (requiring a new 'doughnut' ) I shifted the thing on - at a £50.00 profit.

I say all this because although very nicely made, BMW's are rediculously over engineered and require plenty of dollar if you wanna keep them straight

Looking around in Bristol area for some French specialist to get the crankshaft pulley as to me thats the most important thing atm.

Then bottom mount then exhaust as otherwise the if the mount is still bust the exhuast will still be under stress.

I will probably do the crankshaft pulley and bottom mount this month depending on cost...

Is there any Felly 406 owners in the Bristol area who fancy coming over one weekend and helping out with some bits (Brakes, drop links, timing belt even?)

For some beer money or something, as long as cheaper than garage labour
