Vibration when accelerating

Post by phantomtitch »

My first post although I have owned my 406 HDI 11 estate for over 4 years. 136K miles on the clock..

Other than the new DMFW and clutch last year she has been a great car, but now I am in trouble.

The car vibrates when accelerating hard in third and not so bad in forth, on the overrun its fine.

It also makes a horrible noise from the Alternator side on taking up the drive.

The Pug garage in Wellingborough have replaced the Belt tensior and both drive shafts, things are now worse. £720 spent to date as I needed a car with a tow bar for the weekend and they didn't have a loaner and wouldn't let me take the car away without paying.

Obviously in discussions with the senior mechanic and service manager....!

Car goes back in later today to have guess what, two more drive shafts.... :!: They say the new ones are faulty :o

I have asked about engine mounts and Flywheel crank pully damper buth they say they are all fine.

I wondered if anyone had had a similar sympton and found the cure :?:

Dear god!

720 quid for under £300 in parts (although I can't say I've heard of a single driveshaft needing replacing, let alone four!) and a couple of hours work? Get your car out of there now!

I'd guess your vibration is an engine mount, especially if it's worse after they replaced the driveshafts

EDIT: I bet the ABS rings have corroded on the driveshafts (cheap fix for a competent garage, no need to replace the driveshaft), and they went and ordered the wrong replacements (the number of teeth on the ABS rings varies). If this is the case then the vibration could well be your ABS (and/or traction control/ESP if you have it) activating

Well, they replaced the drivshafts again and guess what, still the same

I told them its engine mounts and they say they are fine, so I said what is it then, they are talking about ripping out the gearbox :!:

As recomended earlier I think its time to run away and hide :(

I think I;ll change the engien mounts myself 8)

Any other toughts :?

Oh and the rattle on tickover isn't the pully its solid on mine  so I stil have the noisy engine belt too

You have a solid crankshaft pulley? I thought the 2 piece one with rubber insert was standard on the 110 HDi. Could that be the source of the vibration? Has it always been a solid pulley?

I'd say the engine mounts at first, but is the vibration occuring as soon as you hit the gas? and then stops when you lift off? this can be down to worn differential bearings in the gearbox.

With gentle acceleration no vibration well none you can feel, its worse in 3rd gear and pulling hard, no difference with either lock on steering...

In 4th its noticable and as you get faster the level declines...

Looks like the garage are changing the engine mounts

Not sure about the other issue with the crank pully or not being a rubber damper or solid?

You can see if the crank pulley has rubber inserts through the wheel arch. If you look at the edge of the pulley (facing the pulley retaining nut) you should see three arc shaped slots in the metal near the edge of the pulley, maybe 1/4" wide and a few inches long - the rubber part should be visible in these slots. Do a google image search for HDI crankshaft pulley.

I had something very simaler on my 2.1td, I tracked it down to two bolts missing from the gearbox, the ones at the top that go in just below the head.
Once I got two more from the scrappy and fitted them it was fine, mine also had had the clutch replaced (before I got the car)and the bolt desturbed.
For such an easy cheap fix I'd take a look myself.

Well its been a while  given up discussions with the Pug garage  , good news is I got all my money back, bad news is I still have the sodding Vibration :(

Anbody know a good mechanic with Pug experiece who could diagnose and then fix the issue £££ waiting for the right applicant

Items changed so far: All engine mounts, both driveshafts, Rear wheel bearing!, Alternator belt and tensioner, DMS flywheel....

Items Checked: Injectors - only the the magic box, crank pulley - Its solid?,

Last resort thoughts: Gearbox or DIff Bearings?

Very Interested in any suggestions 8)

Hey bud, sounds like the same problem I have, I'm looking at the box aswell, just trying to source a second hand one cheapish to swap, done all the same things aswell, but done it myself as I'm a ex toyota apprentice mechanic. Does it subside around 45mph?

This viration really could be a lot of things. I was thinking engine mounts. If you make a quick youtube video and send us the link, im sure it can be identified fairly quicky.

I just noticed the got all your money back thing, nice one!! Must have been quite some discussion...

It should be a 2-part crankshaft pulley, apparently the way to diagnose it is to paint a line right across it, take it for a drive and when you get back see if the line's moved.

So, this vibration, is it "car trying to shake itself to bits" or is it "my fingers are going numb"? Where can you feel it most (steering wheel, arse, pedals, gearshift...)
