It's not necessarily that - the Mk4 Golf is the same age (as a product range) as the 406! The fact is VW seem to intentionally make anything beyond the most basic maintenance into as difficult a job as possible, presumably to put people off DIY. PSA don't seem to care much about that!

VW package a lot of components - eg if one component will break, it will be sold as a "unit" with other components which may be working fine! I suppose it's a tad modular in how its all stuck together - but can work out expensive to fix!

Mate of mine has a MK3 VR6 - Hot hot hot car! :cheesy:
