bonk bonk bonk
Found and cured a new bonk on the front of the car, two bolts holding the steering rack in, one was slightly loosed, I've undone them for clarity.http://s843.photobucket.com/albums/zz35 ... 010950.jpg

Interesting, mine's got an annoying knocking noise from the front and I already checked the usual suspects...

Those bolts should be VERY tight

<steve_earwig> I think this forum is more about keeping our cars going with minimal outlay than giving our cars more reason to go bang

I think mine is drop links but if that fails and check these also

She's always had a slight oil leak, but I can't find the source and it's not a problem.

Re: bonk bonk bonk
Needs to go via photobucket.
Well, fairly warm today without any wet stuff so up in the air it went. It's not those, they were nice and tight already (slightly tighter now
). Btw 18mm
While it was up there I had another look over but still couldn't see owt. I suppose I should get it up in the air but with the weight still on the wheels. Anyway, I tried levering stuff about, I even tried clumping it about with a rubber mallet
but the only thing that made a noise was the weird bracket that holds the exhaust via some rubber bungs to the subframe, there's some sort of steel movement limiter that buzzes. So I kicked the tyre... Yep, that's the noise, how does that work?
While I had the tools out I thought I'd have a go at the buzzing from the tailgate 'cos it's starting to get right on my tits. Pull trim off, hit with fist Bzzz Bzzz Bzzz, noticed the selotape that originally held the wiring tight had perished so I stuck the lot down with sticky back foam, Bzzz Bzzz Bzzz, hold wiper mechanism, Bzzz Bzzz Bzzz, hold lock mechanism, Bzzz Bzzz Bzzz, remove numberplate, Bzzz Bzzz Bzzz, remove holder, Bzzz Bzzz Bzzz, remove numberplate lights (one was blown anyway), Bzzz Bzzz Bzzz, hold lights, Bzzz Bzzz Bzzz, Bzzz Bzzz Bzzz. Ffs
Hmm, what else is on the outside? Hold spoiler, Boom.
Ahh, so it's not just me with a screw loose...

Re: bonk bonk bonk
Ok, it's a metalastic mounting with built-in movement limiters, lucky number 13 'ere:

It just buzzes, especially when you belt the subframe with a mallet
I think tomorrow it's going in the air again, just to check the callipers aren't falling off (though it still makes the noise under braking).

Re: bonk bonk bonk
Now that you mention it, mine does something simular since the cat / fap gubbins has been orf & on again. I put it down to lack of sound deadening in the huge echoing chamber that was once the dpf, but it sounds more like a buzz-come-rattle. Could well be yon metalastic mounting thingy.
Bet it's really cheap....
Ah, mine's different...

No. 18 on here, (2-off), 00001755A7 EXHAUST MOUNTG £2.33 ea.
Mine was making a noise under braking too & as it hadn't been long since the front pads were changed, I armed myself with a set of rear ones. Never got round to fitting them though, cos in the 4 months they've been sitting on the back seat it hasn't made a sound.
THAT'S what I call preventive maintenace

Re: bonk bonk bonk
Nope, still there
I'm sweaty and knackered, it was 15 degrees (February???) even though there are still heaps of snow everywhere. This afternoon I have mostly been lubricating my calipers. Not really falling off but they were bone dry and had a bit of movement, so I gave them a thorough greasing while I was there. Further exploration with my big rubber mallet reveals that if I belt the steering arms there's a noise from somewhere else. Where though? I tried twiddling the steering wheel and I think I can hear it but that's not much use on my tod. Soooo, steering rack? I can't see it's an end anyway, I can't feel any movement between the two when I move the hub (then maybe I'm expecting things to be too apparent). I can't feel it through the wheel, nor make any noise by turning the steering when the wheels are on the ground.
Or the auntie roll bar bushes - they look ok but I can't see much of them.
It's looking like time to see how busy the workshop is
Oh yeah, the pads are 3/4 gone and I'll need new disks (never rains when it piššes down
)

Had a similar problem on a Montego
years ago - proved osf caliper was rattling. Changed to a different make of pads & it never happened again.

Re: bonk bonk bonk
I had a problem on my Montego like that also...turned out to be the anti-rollbar locator (which broke frequently)on the bottom arm...they loosen off apparently and also the strut top bearings proved troublesome too.
On the 405 that replaced it I had a real buzzing annoyance and located it in the front sliding caliper pins.
They got steadily worse as the pads used to wear. This appeared as a vibration in third gear at low engine revs with weight in the car.....took me months to find it! I ended up replacing pads when half worn thinking the cast was duff as the quote I got on replacement calipers was stupid.
This was because the late 405's which I had used many of the 406 parts in and around the hub area.
