my 406 failed its MOT today at Kwik Fit (what was I thinking?!)
The front brake hoses are worn, and need replacing, and also the exhaust link pipe needs replacing.
I immediately went round to my girlfriends brothers garage, where he told me kwik fit like to make stuff up, and that if he'd done the MOT he wouldnt even have mentioned the exhaust pipe (hence im going to him for the retest so I dont have to spend a fortune getting the link pipe changed).
he agreed that the brake hoses need changing though. just wondering what should i expect to pay, because he says he can get them for about £20 for me, whereas Kwik Fit said £45 EACH, not including fitting, so im wondering if Kwik Fit are trying to sodomise my bank balance? they also quoted me £110 for a link pipe, which im sure is a bit of a joke.

Re: Brake Hoses
45 quid EACH?? That's more than Pug!! GSF want 12.25 a side for V6 coupe ones (all they do), so 20 quid sounds ok. There seems to be lots so make sure you get the right ones.
Btw if you go near Quickfit again I'll ban ya

Re: Brake Hoses
I just got a complete set of braided hoses (front and rear) for £43 +5 p&p on ebay. Delivery was just over 24 hours.

That is the auction I got mine from. Fitting the fronts was a fairly easy job to be fair. Took longer cleaning everything up.

Me: The exhaust on my 1.2 Clio is rattly at the back, the backbox seems to move around a bit when I press on the tail pipe
Kwik-Fit: You'll need to replace the whole exhaust, it's rusted to hell. £425 please.
Me: ... see ya
Took it back to the bloke I bought it off, who happened to be a mechanic and MOT tester, and he said "Nah, just needs a weld; the join between the pipe and the back box is snapped, but it's clean". He did it free of charge, took him about 10 minutes. Did me fine til I part-exed the car a year later for the 406

Re: Brake Hoses
The discs and pads would only be about £65 to £75 from local motor factors like eurocarparts, really easy to do yourself...or go to your local independant should be about £150 tops, Mr Clutch is £155, even Mr Peugeot would only be about £180ish
Re: Brake Hoses
My coupe's front brake hoses are dealer-only, and I think they weighed in at about £25 each. Only took me about 30 mins to change and bleed them too
<steve_earwig> I think this forum is more about keeping our cars going with minimal outlay than giving our cars more reason to go bang
