stepper clean

hi all just cleaned the stepper motor on my 1999 1.8 after having startin probs
this was easier said than done after i rounded the torx off
they were SOOOOO TIGHT ended up cutting a slot in with hacksaw blade and using a fat flat head screwdriver
all done now tho and all seems good up to now (touch wood)thanks to jameslxtd for the how to thread. incidently my stepper had magnetti marelli (i think i spelt that right)not bosch or amc or phillips???
also while i am here does any 1 know what temp the fans kick in at ?? i was sat in traffic and the guage went up to nearly hundred and i didn't notice any fan kicking in. and i presume the fan is infront of the rad as there isn't 1 behind it (engine side)

The fan should kick in at around 95 degrees IIRC!

As for the stepper motor, it shouldn't be that hard to get off!

Perhaps the screws were thread locked

i think they were thread locked when i got them out there seemed to be tiny pieces of dryed up thread lock on there but couldn't be sure if thats what it was. i got 1 screw out halfway and would't go any further but went back in fine will keep an eye on the fan thing.....
also dnt call me stupid but what does llrc mean steve

Just as a test, turn your Aircon on and see if the fans kick in, if they do, it could be your thermostat or wiring that's guff.

I've never noticed mine kick in either. I don't like to leave the car to find out either, as i've had one car go with a bust head gasket.

sat in a motorway jam yesterday and kept an eye on the needle ,up to nearly 100 then stats to drop again so the fan must have kicked in
which brings me to my next question: (i have loads)how fast does other peoples temp guages rise. if i am stationary for 2-3 mins its up to 90+ from 70. never seen one go up so quick just from being sat in a jam

Sounds to me like your fan isn't working in low speed mode... not fatal, but it can lead to early complete failure of the fan motor

No idea how low speed works on models with just one fan

turned the aircon on . the fans DID NOT kick in... is this good or bad?? lol

ive had a little look see and there are two fans next to each other spanning the entire width of the rad
they both kick in at about 95 degrees. its a 1999 t plate d8 1,8 petrol model. sorry for any confusion on which model the car is

Strange, unless mines unique, one or both of my fans kick in when turning on the Aircon.

They won't kick in immediately, only when the aircon radiator gets hot enough

Hmm I thought the 1.8 only had the one fan...

In any case, 95c is about where it should kick in at low speed (barely audible from inside the car), and that should be able to hold the temperature steady around 90-95c on any 406 engine. When it hits around 100-105c the fans should kick into full speed mode, which you WILL hear and feel. It's enough to dim the lights!

I suggest keeping an eye on the gauge next time, see how close to 100 it gets.
