My missus will bring home any old stray ...

Post by StevieboyTD »

... literally. She nearly ran over this westie on her delivery rounds.

No tag. Stinking, matted fur, ravenous hungry, etc. Don't think this one has just nipped out of somebodies garden.

Going to give her somewhere to kip, then a bath in the morning then down to the cats & dogs or RSPCA, etc.

After her display of bladder control, she'll be sleeping in the porch!

I applaud your good lady for stopping and picking her up and you
should both be praised for helping the dog , most people would
just have driven on .

Very humanitarian of your wife :)

Brings back the image of a pic I saw on the web featuring this poor wee bedragled kitten with a little blood in its fur and looking very weak, just walking along a but footpath with dozens of people around not giving a flying f**k. I'd have picked the wee thing up and taken it home, regardless. Afterall, it's our fault the animals are in such a situation, so it is only right we help them.

Amazing what a bath (or 2) and an hour of clipping can do...

She's got a water infection, she'll pee within 5 minutes of having a drink, but she understands this and tries to run out to the training mat we've put down in the porch.
Having to leave the lights on around the house, so we can see the reflections on the floor if she doesn't make it ...

VERY people based, been starved of attention while she was on the run. Plays with our 2, plays with the kids, tries to climb into my lap.

Happy puppy (or adult, no way of knowing!)

How are her teeth? Worth trying for a microchip as Doggy suggest, maybe she has a home that misses her... Presumably you'll need to go to the vet's anyway to sort out the infection.

The following is a purely hypothetical situation.

A person stops off to buy 2 cans of coke nearby to where a stray dog may or may not have been found. There may be a poster in the window. The shop keeper may say it was brought in by a group of kids this afternoon.

It might be asking for information about a missing dog, "a straggly looking westie" which got out YESTERDAY....

Just hypothetically, what would you do?

I'm might possibly call the RSPCA and ask their advice. Hypothetically.

Vet's first to check for chip and treat infection , then trip to the nearest
police station to the spot where she was found to see if the owners had
reported her missing (which they would have done if they loved the dog )
If no information forthcoming and if it's possible give her a home because it
sounds like she is finally being cared for .

Strangely it could well be someone's scruffy old dog that got out - like an old lady's dog or something.

The thing is, even if you've given it a 'trim' and a good scrub up then you've acted only out of shear kindness and certainly saved the poor thing from being hit by a car etc.

If you get a treatment from the vets (have you also checked for fleas? I guess you have) and the dog seems otherwise nice then keep it. Wherever it came from wasn't doing a very good job so your treatment is an improvement in the dog's well being.

You're most likely the type of people that would see pleasure in helping and nursing an animal back to strength and would hate to see it go to kenels etc...

Thats a really nice thing to do. I remember once before, I passed a dog that was shaking and looked very disoriented on the way to the shops. I said to my sister that we'd pick it up on the way back before it gets knocked down or anything. When we came back there was no sign of the dog. I regretted not stopping at first.

Try www.doglost.co.uk first, someone may have reported it. I'm not keen on RSPCA as I've heard they're on about pts'ing anything "aged". Hang on, will check on FB with rescue friends and find out some contacts for you :supafrisk:

Not on that site.

Been on to the RSPCA today, nobody has registered her as missing with them. Not surprised.

RSPCA aren't interested in her though, told us to ring the dog warden and get her taken to the pound. Fat chance!

She's got vets again tomorrow morning. Isn't just a water infection, there could be something wrong with her stomach too. :(

After speaking to rescue mates, I think you do legally have to notify the warden, however, after experience with our local one, you CAN offer to keep it until the legal owner comes forward. Then after a period of time you can notify the warden you wish to keep her, or speak to a westie rescue about having her rehomed.
