I guess it depends on the engine, my tubby always sits around 80 and it's running perfectly (well apart from slipping clutch!)

so what is the purpose of the stat? start engine from cold runs at 70-75 no matter how far the distance. as long as ya movin,
5-6 minutes of stationary / stop start traffic and its at 90 - 95.
so am i right in assuming the stat is sticking closed thus when no airflow to the rad the temp goes up??

It's running cold when on the move but heats up when stopped, which probably means the thermostat is either stuck open or missing altogether.
