Accelerator pedal sticking

Hi, I have a 2001 1.8 16v 406. The problem I have is that every morning and even after leaving the car for a couple of hours, trying to press the accelerator pedal is very difficult. I have to press down really hard and then it becomes free. Is there something causing it to stick? I have spayed some lube around the metal hinge in the drivers footwell and where the cable goes into the front bulkhead. After that I lose where the cable comes out into the engine bay. Any tips on where to find the cable and exactly where it goes to (apart from saying the carb!!). Is there something that needs cleaning out or is the cable trying to say its on its last legs. I had a similar issue before with my HDi. The steel cable has most likely eroded its plactic covering at a bend in the cable and this prevents fluid movement of the cable. The solution I came up with was to re-route the cable and the area which was affected was no longer in a bend.

Hi, found the cable and applied wd40 to all the moving parts associated with the cable. On one of the bends the plastic covering has rubbed away but didnt seem to be that bad. Initially the pedal wasnt sticking as much but this morning with it being a bit colder it was sticking like it was before. Any other ideas?

I think you'll be looking at changing the cable to be honest if the outer sheath has worn away.

Just to let u know, had the car serviced and found it wasnt the cable at fault. Apparentely inside the carb it was thick with black carbon causing the valvey things to stick. Had it all cleaned up and is as good as new now. My mechanic said pugs are reknown for this. Dont know if its true or not but dont care now the problem is fixed.

i thought this engine is fuel injected.

Had the same engine in a Xantia. Sticking accelerator in it turned out to be the carpet. Stanley knife soon sorted that!

Apologies for putting carb down!!! All I know it was a metal bit that the cable connects to was getting stuck due to all the build up of black stuff.

This happens a lot on Toyota Avensis engines (early ones) also I have to clean out the throttle butterfly every couple of months on my son's Astra.
You just take off the air intake rubber pipe and spray carb cleaner all over the butterfly valve and the inlet pipe, a 5 minute job.

Haha, ahh, ive not known this to happen on other cars but it happened on my fiat stilo, although on that it didnt cause it to stick it made the idle lumpy.

on those they have no ice just a small gap around the throttle body butterfly and drive by wire setting the throttle.





Carb/brake cleaner and a bit of rag is all thats needed to put it right though
