Re: JUMPING OUT OF FIFTH
just odered the socket... i was going to try and do it tomorrow but ecp dont sell that socket and halfords want £30 for it or ebay for £7 so looks like im starting the job in the middle of the week.
will look at the rear brake drums and shoes as pedal travel is a fair bit to get a good bite but when you lift up the handbrake slightly and then brake the pedal travel is spot on so the rear brakes may just need cleaning are adjusting, hopefully

Yes, if your car has the rear drum brakes and the footbrake pedal travel is good with the handbrake on then you need to adjust the rear brakes...it shouldn't need the handbrake adjusting afterwards as the shoe adjustment will take care of it.
Re: JUMPING OUT OF FIFTH
next thing is getting a towbar. im worried that the cheaper ones on ebay wont be an exact fit and witter et al are way more expensive..
Re: JUMPING OUT OF FIFTH
You can't beat a Witter...my brother bought one from ebay second hand the other day for £60.

rear brakes are nearly new. way less than a few thousand miles but adjuster on one was out of line and not working properly. all freed up and greased on the rears and we have stopping power for a while at least

Re: JUMPING OUT OF FIFTH
Bottom mount isn't bad to do like Jasper said. The worst thing for me was splitting the ball joint from the wishbone arm - took a lot of hammering....

Re: JUMPING OUT OF FIFTH
will get a splitter from ecparts. i have a eurocarparts less than 2mns walk from home so very handy when i halfway through a job and need something else
def going to start it when socket comes as i said before this is the last issue i know of and when thats done i'll hasve a good runnning estate with only 100k on the clock and evry thing works as it should, even air con was given a full service a few weeks before i bought it and it came with fsh from new at the same garage with 15 stamps in the book , the car did 7000 miles a year with its one and only previus owner and he had it serviced yearly on the dot.
came with 4 new tyres and a new exhaust and a new cambelt 2yrs ago. i think it may be worth keeping and just adding the towbar so i dont have to dunk my new golf or the i30 into the sea every few days

Re: JUMPING OUT OF FIFTH
f................ nightmare..
i hour to get nut if bittom bj as rusted badly
1 hr to get nut off tr rod end
3 hrs and now given up to loosen driveshaft nut. snapped 2 torque wrenches and wont budge a millimetre. 2 16 stone men on a 2ft bar would not shift it.
lost patience and ripped off under engine cowl and cant bodge the mount up as nothing left of it. going to try lifting engine to get strain off the mount and get in and try and push it out from the front to the back but dont hold out any hope that way.

Re: JUMPING OUT OF FIFTH
got the area around the rear engine mount clear , around the back of it anyway. i just need to work out one of those winding devixces so i can wind the new one in at the same time as winding the old one out...
Re: JUMPING OUT OF FIFTH
Sorry you had such a tricky one!
There is a work around for this....
Remove the brake caliper by taking out the bottom bolt on the caliper, swing the caliper upwards and pull it away from the pads.
Undo the bolt holding the cable bracket on top of the hub assembly (13mm size)
Remove the ABS sensor (carefully) if it won't move then take out the wiring connection under the wheel arch.
Take off the track rod end.
Undo bottom ball joint.
Take the bolt out from the bottom of the strut where it connects to the hub.
With an assistant because it will be heavy...knock the hub assembly downwards to remove the the strut from the hub.
Now you can remove the driveshaft complete with the hub assembly with the driveshaft nut still in place.
Next you can remove the mounting bracket and get on with the mount replacement.
This will be much easier than trying to remove the broken mounting in situ....I promise you I know!!
