Its going to be so extremely rare that they will depreciate very slowly and will become a collectors item. They will end up selling them in the Uk. Not badged as a GTi though

all that power from a 4-pot  bet it wouldn't even make it 100 miles to a track before needing a service, a new clutch and an engine rebuild

The article says:
It's packing a 2.5-litre flat four engine, which has been reworked to produce 395bhp.

According http://www.subaru.co.uk the 230bhp WRX is:
4 cylinder Horizontally opposed SUBARU BOXER, 16 valve DOHC, with Turbo and intercooler
and the 300bhp STI is:
4 cylinder Horizontally opposed SUBARU BOXER, 16 valve DOHC, with AVCS, Turbo and Intercooler

...and this here is why I don't think highly strung engines have any sort of lifespan to them without ludicrous maintenance:

F1 V10: ~100bhp/pot
Cosworth Scooby F4: 99bhp/pot
Scooby STI F4: 75bhp/pot
Bugatti Veyron W16: 63bhp/pot
BMW M3 V8: 52bhp/pot
Audi R8 V10 (Lambo): 52bhp/pot
406 V6: 35bhp/pot
406 HDi90 I4: 22bhp/pot

A mate of mine works in Audi and he drove the R8 V10. He said it wasnt the acceleration of the thing that did it for him (but it was bl***y fast), he said it was the handling. Every jerk of the wheel moved it and there was zero body roll. Imagine that going round a bend at 70mph. Some thrill!

You've not seen how I take some clear roundabouts on NSL roads when I'm eco-driving and don't want to waste fuel* slowing down and speeding up again

(* ok so I actually put more power on to maintain stability, but it's less wasteful than taking the roundabout at sane speeds :supafrisk:)

Surely your not suggesting you break the 30 mph speed limit of roundabouts are you MJB?

CountryPug wrote:I think this move will reduce the value of an already damaged 'Peugeot GTI' brand. However, we look at this from the perspective of Peugeot connoisseurs who over the past decade (maybe more in some cases) have driven Pug's finest in terms of handling, looks and performance (106, 205, 306, 309, 405, (406?) anyone...) I've no doubt that Pugs marketeers have been busy and see that there is a gap in the market for a less extreme watered down hot hatch, (a luke warm hatch if you will). The 308 is apparently a very good car in terms of practicality and slapping a GTI badge on the bootlid and giving it a few extra horsies will no doubt steer your sensible car buyer who doesnt know/understand or care about pugs past heritage away from the Renault/Ford/Seat stealerships and into Peugeots.

It could be a good move to selling a few more 308's but I worry that the overall damage to the 'GTI' brand will eclipse that. The 206 and 207 gti's have been a shadow of the 205 and this latest 308 could be a final nail in the coffin. I hope I'm wrong...
Hi country pug, I could not agree more. I have owned many peugeots. As for Gti's in my opinion the 309 gti's was the best for handling or the ugly duck as it was known    It would sit flat any corner at most speeds   we are talking trebble figures here. And the 205 gti's great great fun have owned a few. Slight twitchy handling when pushed hard.

My favourtie that i owned was a 205 Mi16 on twin webber 45's the induction roar was fantastic    It would hit 60 between 5-6 secs and was producing the same power to rate ratio as ferrari. I think it was around 270bhp and the same amount of torque but weighed around 800kg And not forgetting the 405. My parents owned one for 18yrs from new. To be honest in the late 80's your choice a vauxhall cavalier/ford sierra/peugeot 405. I still think now the design of the 405 still looks interesting and fresh. As does the 406. But the 406 coupe is the best looking car i have owned
