Well iwas thinkin of getting a private plate for the 406 but ithink il pass on that now,
idont see why "people shouid pay fees to keep it on the car ,
it dont add up,
its more trouble than its worth me thinks,
My only reason to get another plate is to hide the cars year as its a v reg but ithink that be a stupid idea,

It says on it "The Assignment Fee has already been paid" - I guess that means, the buyer doesn't have any fees to pay, as it's already been paid?
the new buyer will have to pay DVLA £80 to transfer it from the retention cetificate to a vehicle (logbook)
PLUS if you dont find a new buyer you will have to pay DVLA £110 to keep it on retention for a further 12 months
Once the plate is on retention, it doesn't cost anything to put it on a vehicle. It only costs money when renewing the certificate & taking the plate off the car. I've had to do this all a few times with mine & my father's private plates. The retention fee is the £80 transfer fee + the years fee to retain the plate on a certificate. That's why you don't have to pay to put it back on a car.

It is a bit confusing at first - I had to do all the paperwork for my Dad's one as the first car we put it on was the Mondeo we gave them, so we even had to keep it in my name until the plate transfer was done to keep things simple.
Change of car time is a real headache with them as it takes a few weeks to get everything in order as the tax & MOT come through first, but the V5 takes another couple of weeks after that. If ever you decide to sell the car, put the plate on retention as soon as possible - it costs more than transferring car to car, but it does make the whole process a lot less complicated when you're dealing with buyers for your car.

how long does it take to put on retention then from a logbook ?
when i transfered my plate at local DVLA office it was a friday. my tax and mot came 5 days later on the wednesday (3 days if you dont class weekend)
and logbook arrived on the 8th day after on the saturday.
all in all it took 5 working days to get all my stuff through but i was told expect upto 6 weeks for logbook to arrive
and upto 2 weeks for tax and MOT
Think it took me about a month from sending off the form to receiving the retention certificate. Tax & MOT in the old reg only took just over a week to come back though.
Also, don't be mislead by plate sales companies who offer to handle the transfer for a fee to save you all the hassle of driving to your local DVLA office & trying to park & queuing etc. - it can all be done by post & you can even download & print the transfer application forms yourself now.

The problem with getting a plate to NI is that they charge for transferring the plate to one of their GB cars, plus the DVLA charge, then charge again for transferring this to your NI car, plus the DVLNI charge.
Easily adds another £460 to the cost
