Die!

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

Hmm this sedre thing's useful.

Part 8010. "Coolant Temperature Unit". That's the Bitron jobbie ain't it? Someone got a picture, cos I ain't got a clue where it is (not in the wheelarches!). Looking at the diagram, I'd say it's on the dashboard harness, so probably one of the many many boxes behind the glovebox

Reckon my problem's wiring. Either 8064/8065 between the bitron and the blue cts, or yellow wire 405 between bitron and ECU. Once I find the bitron I'll get the oscilloscope out and I should have an answer.

EDIT (for my own use):
405 is green on pin 6 of the black coolant ecu connector. It is joined (at E405, whatever that is, looks like the back of the BSI?) to 405B which is grey and pin 23 of the BSI, on a yellow 26-pin connector

Engine bay brown CTS 8008 "air conditioning engine coolant temperature thermistor":
Yellow wire 8065 changes to colour "RS" inside the car. Goes to pin 14 on the bitron
"BG" colour wire 8064 goes to pin 7 on the bitron

Engine bay Blue CTS 4030 "engine coolant thermistor (indicator)":
White wire 400 becomes blue wire 400B inside the car. Pin 10 on the BSI (12-pin brown connector)
White wire 8051A turns grey inside the car and goes to the AC evap thermistor (2-pin white plug). Comes out as 8051 which goes to pin 7 on the BSI (12-pin brown connector)

When the IE window pops up, copy the http://127.0.0.1... url and open it in Chrome, which has native support for the SVG format used by sedre. Much faster. Firefox might also do the job, but it pisses me off too much nowadays :evil:

Oddly enough that's the only reason I haven't uninstalled Chrome, although it isn't much of an improvement. Anyway, it's probably going out of date now I've managed to turn off all the keys for its bluddy update utility (doing something processor-heavy? Well I guess this is the perfect time for me to update! :evil: )

I've not tried it in FF - I think it's a habit I got from my days with the deeply flawed Maxthon but I prefer not to use the same browser I use for the internet to do other things with. What sort of issues are you getting with it? Just now I can't do much else other than surf or sleep and FF strikes me as being remarkably trouble-free these days. I did notice that when 7.0.0 came out it almost immediately went to 7.0.1 so I guessed someone was having troubles.

Edit: what were we talking about? Oh yes, any joy with the car?

Not had a chance to look. Can't believe how quickly the temperature climbs now I've replaced the thermostat though - probably 300 yards from cold and the blower's chucking warm air!

Not looking forwards to trying to find this little ecu though :(

Could it be this 1338A1? I can't find it in the Service Box back up, I was hoping there might be a repair procedure for it. No such thing on the fully multiplex diagrams sadly, so no installation diagrams.

Been watching this thread with interest, but not been able to contribute anything of value, unfortunately. :oops:

Sedre sounds interesting, how'd you come by it? (after a Google, I tried unsuccessfully to join Peugeot Forums for about an hour this morning. :frown: Their site won't let you register, or contact them to say so. Reckon hacking your way into MI6 would be simpler). :roll:

carry on.......
2002 HDi 2.2 Exec Estate, (2008-12) (wonderful)
2003 HDi 2.2 6-speed Exec Estate (2012-19) (also a gem)
2009 Citroen C5 2.0 HDi VTR+ Estate (godawful heap)
2008 BMW E91 330i touring (great fun - murdered by a reversing SUV)
2007 BMW E91 325i touring (slower smoother quieter)

I have had a breakthrough! I caught it dead this morning with my PP2000 plugged in! Engine ecu faults (all marked as intermittent):

Battery voltage - Coherence
Purge canister solenoid valve / control function - Open circuit
1/5 injectors control function - Open circuit
2/6 injectors control function - Open circuit
3/4 injectors control function - Open circuit
and an open circuit on the ICV (forgot to transcribe :oops)

These things are all on the same harness (if you ignore the fact there's a connector to all the injectors). I can see there's only two things these things are connected to - the ECU (via 6 wires) and 1304 "engine management multi-function double relay" via 2 wires on the same relay. Bear in mind, that when it's failed, a sharp movement (clutch in then dumped at speed, or attempting to start in gear) is all that will get the car started again, and it seems extremely likely that this relay is dodgy

The trouble is, there's two double relays in the ECU box, both with black 15-pin connectors. I'm looking for the one with two wires going into pin 6, not pin 14.

I severely doubt at this point that the temperature gauge fluctuations and the engine cutting out are related!

Ah, there's nothing like chasing one fault masked by another :roll:

Presumably the other relay is 1307. Can you see code on the wires? Swap them over? Change one for a new relay, if the fault's still there swap the one you took out for the other one? Or are they different?

The two relay boxes (they look more like ECUs than relays) are different. I suspect now that a few taps to the offending unit will kill an idling engine, so identification shouldn't be too hard. Even if I can't cause failure by tapping, I should be able to peel the insulation back from the connector and see a wire number.

You can see what I'm on about here - either side of the ECU. What's the betting It's just that I've not put one back on properly? :oops: £45 for a new one of those things, and servicebox only lists the one (without saying which, obviously...). Think I'll have a look at it first, then go grab a 2nd hand one. I'm driving down the A50 saturday, so it may be wise for me to stop by at Magic Ade's Workshop of Wonder en-route :) Might grab a new bumper while I'm at it (don't tell the missus!) :lol:

On the temperature front, I'm pretty sure looking at servicebox, I want to be looking under the glovebox. Urgh. No I don't. Anywhere but there... :cry:

Wouldn't it be nice if there was a program for changing part numbers for code numbers? Too hard? What about making the parts descriptions on Service Box match the ones in the diagrams? Seems that's too hard for them as well :roll:

I'd love to see Ade's workshop, must be an amazing place!

The relay that Service Box shows next to your ecu appears to be this: http://bartebben.com/parts/peugeot/306/ ... 54935.html (the other number seems to be meaningless) I'm not sure if you can identify one from this pic but it came up on a search.

It's the one on the left, nearest the coolant tank. Couldn't bash it or wiggle the wires into not working, but the pin configuration and wire numbers match up.

I also worked out the following:
RS = pink
BG = beige
VI = violet

I've pulled the relay box out and put it back in with zip ties, so I can smack it and replace it easily. About to send a msg to Ade and hope he can phone me before I'm past the M1...

In other news, I still have no idea where the coolant ECU is. There's one thing I can see under the glovebox which looks right but isn't (there's a box with a back 15-pin connector, but the wires are in the wrong number range). I can't see anything under the driver's side besides the fusebox and BSI either :(

Well new relay box is in, and the car did 400 miles or so without a stutter, so I'm hoping it's fixed

While I was at Ade's I picked up a new cruise control switch because mine was knackered (button not coming out when pressed in, cruise control not working). Quickly changed it and still no working CC :( Looked when I got home and yup - I forgot to reconnect the vacuum pipe. D'OH!

I also got a new rear bumper :oops:
