But 80 miles from 2 gallons on a diesel sounds about right though.
Generally the 406 gauge is great for a quick glance. But if you give it regular glances you sorta think... Errrr what?
Thats certainly my experience. But I did go out to a merc chassised coach the other day that had run out in Taunton Dean services. There it was, guage on 1/3 full, mileage left saying 300 and bone dry. And this is a 6 month old £300,000 vehicle.

Your lucky if it's a hose pipe, sometimes they bang a hole into the tank, and it drains into a container. Then you have to stump up for a tank too.

I thought he was stretching the truth a bit, my hdi 90 only gets early to mid 40's round town driving carefully. I was just interested as i want to swap my saloon for an estate in the near future but will probably stick with diesel.

The computers can be very inaccurate, and that town figure sounds way too high.

My mate's 1.6 Megane averages 28mpg (according to the computer) on the same commute on which I average over 50mpg.

My HDi had a tough time on some hilly country roads today and still got 50mpg
I forget how capable it is if you keep it above 2000rpm. (It feels a bit cruel though. The gearing is just too tall to cope with hills.)

Current: 407 2.2 HDi 170 & C6 2.7 HDi.
Former: 406 1.9 TD; 406 HDi 90; 407 2.2 160; 307cc 180; 508 HDi 140.

You get better fuel economy if you drive with little throttle between 2-3k. Under 2k it injects more fuel to make sure it dosen't stall ;)

I just got damn near 600 miles on my last tank of petrol, which includes a lot of stop-start driving, uphill & downhill, and along twisty roads with a 60 MPH limit.

The route was Aberdeen to Thurso and back (230 miles each way, so 460 miles as a round-trip). Using normal Shell FuelSave petrol, not the V-Power stuff.

The boot was jam-packed full, and I had two passengers (plus the passenger seat behind me was loaded up with stuff too).

I can thrash the 2.2 engine quite hard and still get the same fuel mileage as I used to get in my old 1.8 litre 406 saloon.

been driving a 2.0 11o bhp to day,
its averaging 37 -38 mpg round town, thats shite imho, ithink it will be going on ebay,
the 1.6 picasso is getting a good, 38 round town so for the size of the thing compared to a 406 iwill be staying with it for abit longer :(

That's more than mine gets & better than Peugeot's official figures for the urban cycle.
