The BMW system's different - screams up to within 6 inches of the car in front, then flashes the lights and so on......

I can easily fall into this category......BUT..... if you are a car enthusiast you actively work to eliminate any faults as soon as they appear, striving to own a perfect motorcar. Trouble is it's not easy (or cheap) and can become a bit of a losing battle [see my previous 406 for details].
I wonder if being a sympathetic owner and enthusiast is more of a hindrance. There's been loads of times in the past where I've driven someone else's car and found that they'd better get this/that checked out only to be met with the usual "oh, really? I hadn't noticed" kinda response
There's one school of thought I haven't tried yet which is the 'wait until it really does break' academy; here you detect a problem but ignore it...........wait and wait............then if the car stops working/burns/collapses/melts THEN you go find out what's up

Dunno. My previous 406 was OK - no reliability problems to speak of. Same with my current ones. My CDTI Accord though was a never ending mass of faults. I am thinking older cars are just more reliable than newer ones. But then again, maybe older cars had all their factory niggles sorted out in their first few years?
I'm convinced that the current 'new' cars are made to last 5 years.
I was asked "by a friend" to look into BMW 320d's recently, well, this morning and we found that there's Two main choices:
There's a 163bhp which is heavy on fuel and breaks a lot and there's a 177 bhp which is perfect in every way and yes the 163 is 5 years old and the 177 models from 2007+ cost about eleventy million pounds

I've noticed manufacturers seem to churn out new models quicker than they used too - the Focus is a good example of this with about 3 model changes over 7 years or so? don't know what that was all about.
Years ago, about every 6 years, we'd be enticed by some new 'revised headlamps' but now they hit us with a COMPLETELY new car every few years. Second hand motors don't stand a chance.

Go to Europe and cars are almost 'affordable' well certainly not the ball-breaking financial risk they are here.
I was just about to start quoting prices when I realised - "Europe" New cars are at least 50% more here and I'm just wondering what joining the pee-and-urine onion is going to do to the price of 2nd hand cars, where you pay more for a 3-year old car than the rest of Urope pays for a new one. It's gonna drop through the floor baby
