Sorry not 406 related,

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

So if thats normal for the fans to stay on,

imight have a go at Getting the Air con working, all the pipe work looks healthy enough, apart from the stray hose thats s'posed to fit on
the blower motor

anyone used the Halfords top up cans?

last time itried it on another car icouidnt get the system to draw it in,

thinking of bridging pins 1 and 3 on the preasure switch, and see what happens,

Lozz if it's low on gas then it's leaking somewhere for sure. You'd be wasting your time and money trying to add gas (and it's not exactly good practice :supafrisk: ). It's most likely the condenser is corroded at the bottom.

More like it

Sorry mate, bit of a pet hate of mine and something I've had a lot of dealings with too. I've read many times where people have been to garages, had the a/c fixed, and then it breaks again 2 days later - it's all because it wasn't tested properly.

The correct method is:
  • Safely recover any old gas.
Carry out Nitrogen pressure test - something like 250PSi on the gauge and monitor for at least 30 mins watching for pressure drops.
If successful, vacuum the system to remove moisture (another 30 mins at least).
Fill system with correct weight of refrigerant (vital) and correct quantity of oil for lubrication (also vital).
Test air temps (looking for 5 to 8 deg C at the vents).
A new receiver/drier is recommended especially if the system has been 'empty' for some time.
