when this gets to the back of the engine can you see where it goes?

There's a pipe and a cable there James, I assume you're after the pipe (1). It goes through the device you can see in the background (2), then up to a connector at the top of the bulkhead (3), then down the bulkhead and disappears, can't see where it goes then.

no. 2 looks like the fuel pressure regulator for the high pressure pump, but it could also be the egr valve, does no.3 have any vacuum hoses on it?

Yup that's deffinately a fuel line, I know I just pulled the connector off at 1 and got soaked!!! Anyway following that past 2...
Image

It goes through another connector at 1, then disappears under the inlet manifold at 2.
Image

There's another connector under there....
Image

Before it emerges and terminates here at 3
Image

BUT..... Thinking about what you asked earlier about pipes diappearing into the wing what about this one? Starts at A, passes through some device at B then disappears into the wing near the power steering reservoir at C.

A,B,C are part of the EVAP emission control, now were at a dead end, even my dad has no idea where the egr on a hpi is

i would just stick the plugs in it, clear the codes and go for a long drive, until then theres not much else we can do, if you want, on wednesday night im going to swindon, as its halfway there i could pop over and have a look if the plugs dont cure it

OK mate, thanks for all your help so far, you're a star.

I'll get some plugs tomorrow from the stealers and see what happens.

There's no need for you to put yourself out though mate. Much as I'd like the opportunity to buy you a pint after all the assistance you've provided, Swindon is still a good hour and a half from here. If the plugs don't fix it I'll just wave the white flag and book it into the stealer.

They are 'special' plugs are they not? interferance can occur in the BSi if you use just 'any' make.

That must be the best 'Photo Story' on here yet did you used to work for Hayne's Dai? :cheesy:

Lol, nah I've just spent years doing inspection instructions for people who either can't be arsed, or simply can't, read

Just ordered the plugs, £10 each (+VAT) but they won't have them in 'till Wednesday....

Hmmmm now then. In preparation for my new plugs arriving tomorrow, I "modified" my plug spanner today (long story  ), so I thought I may as well take the NGKs out and put the previous set of Bosch ones back in. Ther were still on a shelf in the garage so I gave them a good clean with a wire brush and fitted them in. Started the car a few times and got the light and message, but on the fourth go there was no beeb or message, and the light went out 8) . Went out for a spin but a few miles later it came on again, along with the beep and the message.

Soooo I don't reckon the plugs are going to fix this, whatever the problem is it seems to get worse as the car warms up (as we previously concluded), but surely it's just something being a bit sticky? What are the components of the EGR system? Am I right in thinking theres a valve controlled by a solenoid, and a separate flow meter? What do these things look like? I know they're hiding somewhere but if we knew what we were looking for I'm sure Neil and I could locate them :? D'you reckon I could clean / lubricate / repair any bits myself? What about replacing them myself?

Sorry for so many questions but I'd really rather not let it go to the dealer if I can avoid it, partly because I don't want to pay their prices and partly because I don't trust them :|

i need to know where the egr valve is and the egr solenoid, also i have looked at the pics and you dont have an air flow meter, so i will also need to know how the egr flow is measured, i will ask my dad to get us a wiring diagram tomorow so we can really get stuck in, i need to know that you are 101% sure its a misfire at idle, do you get a distinct pop from the exhaust when it happens? do you have to touch the throttle to keep it alive when it goes to stall?
when it happens when cruising how quickly does it go away?

With regards to the light going off after 3 starts, I read last night about the light will come one after the car has been started 3 times and the fault is present. The same goes for it going off. I can find the text again if it's important.
