Re: Gatso Ghost Flash?

I remember reading an article in a newspaper several years ago about a guy who got a speeding ticket from a GATSO camera, and refuted it because his car wasn't capable of travelling at the speed indicated. He ended up winning his claim in court because he independently verified the car's top speed at a race track. He actually proved his car couldn't have been doing the speed he was being charged with. Even though the car's actual top speed was enough to break the law, it's because the difference between the alleged speed and his car's proven top speed was so great (something like 40 MPH on top of what is car could actually do) that the case got thrown out - they couldn't prove he had been speeding.

As I recall, it cost him more money than the fine was, but he didn't get points on his license.

It's the bastards with the laser guns that are the worrying ones - no warning (because they hide the vans) and if they target your alloys and say you're doing 350mph in a 30, then you're going to get done for doing 350mph in a 30, and there's no actual evidence of your speed to refute other than the copper's word, which is gold in court...
I believe you can ask the %$&? for proof that the radar gun has been calibrated and tested that very day, if this can't be proven then you can dispute it. There was a thing on 5th gear once when someone pointed a laser detector at a wall and it was apparently doing 15mph....

Saying that, I feel if you are courteous, accept blame fair and just be polite to the officers then it is likely you will be let off with a stern warning - I've got away with loads....

Even a properly calibrated gun can give erroneous readings if not operated properly, and of that there is no proof.

How do you be courteous to a letter through the post? That's my biggest gripe with these bastards, you don't even know you were caught speeding until you get the letter - or don't, and even if driving under the limit, I still get chills wondering "was that really still an NSL road? Have I missed a speed limit sign?" if I go past a camera van somewhere I'm not used to. The feeling of dread when going through the post for the next few weeks is unpleasant to say the least
<steve_earwig> I think this forum is more about keeping our cars going with minimal outlay than giving our cars more reason to go bang
